Chapter 7 - Dawn at the Tower

At 8:30 AM, the grand auditorium of the downtown Pittsburgh headquarters of Oaks Enterprises was packed to absolute capacity.
Hundreds of shareholders, financial analysts, institutional investors, and reporters sat in tense silence beneath the soaring glass atrium. Cameras flashed continuously toward the center stage, where Marcus Vance stood behind the mahogany podium, dressed in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, looking every bit the grieving, resolute leader stepping into the breach.
"It is with profound sorrow," Marcus began, his voice echoing across the silent hall with theatrical solemnity, "that we must address the ongoing, critical condition of our Chief Executive Officer, Theren Oaks. Despite the tireless efforts of sixteen of the world's finest medical specialists, Mr. Oaks’s body continues to succumb to an aggressive, unidentifiable systemic failure following the tragic attack three weeks ago..."
In the front row, several board members nodded solemnly, their faces etched with premature grief and corporate calculation.
Marcus cleared his throat, adjusting his notes. "In accordance with Section 4 of our corporate governance charter, the board of directors is moving to invoke emergency executive succession. Effective immediately—"
CLANG.
The massive double doors at the back of the auditorium swung open with a resounding crash that echoed off the glass ceiling.
Every head in the room spun around.
Walking down the center aisle was Theren Oaks.
He wore a crisp black overcoat, his posture upright, his dark hair combed back with absolute precision. There was no trace of fever in his eyes, no stagger in his stride. Flanking him on either side were four armed private security officers led by Dex Malone, their dark suits cutting through the crowd like a wedge of steel.
A collective gasp swept through the auditorium. Reporters surged to their feet, flashbulbs exploding in a blinding wall of white light.
Marcus Vance froze behind the podium, the color draining entirely from his face until his skin looked like skim milk. His mouth opened, but no words came out.
Theren walked all the way down the center aisle, climbed the marble steps to the stage, and stopped just two feet away from the podium.
He didn't look at the microphones. He looked directly into Marcus Vance’s wide, terrified eyes.
"Good morning, Marcus," Theren said, his voice carrying clearly across every microphone in the hall.
"T-Theren..." Marcus stammered, gripping the edges of the podium so hard his knuckles turned white. "We were told... the doctors said you wouldn't survive the night—"
"The doctors were looking in the wrong place," Theren interrupted smoothly. "They were looking for an infection. But infections require pathogens. What I had was a manufactured polymer-coated bio-vector embedded directly into my surgical sutures by someone with administrative access to our medical supply chain."
The auditorium erupted into chaotic murmurs. Reporters began shouting questions over one another.
Marcus swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. "That’s... that’s absurd. Who could possibly—"
"A man who wanted to clear the board for a hostile takeover," Theren finished for him. He turned his head slightly toward the side wings of the stage. "Bring them in, Dex."
Two federal marshals stepped out from the wings, escorting a pale, sweating procurement manager from the Philadelphia medical distributor—the man Marcus had paid to swap the suture spools. The manager took one look at Theren, then at Marcus, and began speaking before the marshals even reached the center of the stage.
"He paid me!" the manager shouted, pointing a shaking finger directly at Marcus Vance. "Mr. Vance ordered the custom suture batch! He gave me the polymer formula three months ago!"
Marcus staggered back from the podium, his legs buckling slightly beneath him.
Dex Malone stepped forward, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around Marcus’s wrists with a sharp, metallic click.

"Marcus Vance," Dex said coldly, reading the words like a death sentence, "you are under arrest for attempted murder, industrial sabotage, and corporate conspiracy."
The flashbulbs blinded the stage as the marshals and security guards escorted Marcus away, his head bowed, his career, his freedom, and his empire dissolving into nothingness before the eyes of the entire financial world.
