Chapter 10 - Sunday Morning

The kitchen of the suburban home was filled with the warm, comforting aroma of melting butter, fresh coffee, and maple syrup.
Sunlight poured through the spotless white kitchen window, casting golden rays across the granite countertops where a stack of perfectly golden-brown pancakes sat neatly on a ceramic platter. Not a single edge was charred. Not a single pancake was misshapen.
Daniel stood at the stove, flipping the final pancake with a practiced, effortless wrist movement. He wore a simple flannel shirt and an apron that read World's Okayest Dad—a gag gift Lily had given him three Father's Days ago.
Behind him, the kitchen doorway creaked softly.
Daniel turned around, spatula in hand, and saw Lily standing in the doorway. She was wearing her favorite oversized college hoodie, her hair pulled back into a loose ponytail. The heavy surgical wire was gone, replaced by a discreet retainer, and while faint traces of bruising still lingered along her jawline, her face was illuminated by a bright, radiant smile.
"Good morning, sleepyhead," Daniel said softly, setting the skillet down on the counter. "How are you feeling today?"
Lily walked slowly across the kitchen, stepping up to her father and wrapping her arms gently around his waist, burying her face against his chest.
Daniel froze for a second, then dropped the spatula, wrapping his strong, protective arms tightly around her, resting his chin gently on the top of her head.
"I'm feeling wonderful, Daddy," Lily whispered, her voice a little husky but completely clear. "The doctor said my recovery is way ahead of schedule. And... I saw the news this morning."
Daniel pulled back slightly, looking down into her bright, clear eyes. "Did you?"
"Three federal prison sentences, a disgraced senator, and an entire military academy administration forced to resign," Lily smiled, her eyes sparkling with a mix of awe and deep, abiding love. "You know... for a retired logistics officer who forgets birthdays, you're awfully good at fixing things."
Daniel smiled back, reaching up to gently tap the tip of her nose. "Just doing my job, sweetheart. A father always protects his family."
"Even if he has to turn into a ghost to do it?" she teased gently.
Daniel chuckled, shaking his head as he turned back to plate the pancakes. "Ghosts are overrated, Lily. I prefer being right here, burning Sunday morning breakfast—or trying not to."
Lily laughed, pulling out a chair at the kitchen table and sitting down as Daniel placed a steaming stack of pancakes in front of her, pouring a generous circle of pure maple syrup over the top.
She picked up her fork, took a bite, and closed her eyes in pure satisfaction.

"Best pancakes ever, Daddy," she said, looking across the table at the man who was her protector, her anchor, and her hero.
Daniel sat down opposite her, taking a sip of his coffee as the morning sunlight warmed the room, wrapping them both in a quiet, unbreakable peace. The war was over. The shadows were gone. And the father and his daughter were finally home.
