Chapter 9 - The Legal Fortress

The weeks following Bernice’s arrest transformed the luxury apartment from a gilded cage into a true home. With the toxic presence permanently excised, the air inside the high-rise felt lighter, cleaner, and filled with a quiet, restorative peace.
Christopher did not stop at simply calling the police. Working alongside Savannah’s high-powered corporate legal team, he retained one of the top criminal defense and family law attorneys in Southern California to ensure that his mother never came within a thousand miles of their family again.
The legal proceedings moved swiftly and ruthlessly. Armed with the digital ledger from the Notes app, photographic evidence, medical records from previous emergency room visits where Savannah had lied out of fear, and corroborating statements from building staff who had occasionally overheard Bernice’s verbal tirades, the district attorney’s office threw the book at her.
Bernice was formally charged with felony domestic battery against a vulnerable adult, alongside elder-abuse counterclaims that stripped away any remaining legal leverage or sympathy she might have attempted to claim in court. Her defense attorney advised her that pleading guilty in exchange for a suspended sentence and mandatory psychological counseling was her only hope of avoiding significant prison time.
Simultaneously, Christopher and Savannah’s legal team secured an ironclad, permanent restraining order. It prohibited Bernice from contacting them, approaching the building, or coming within five hundred yards of either Christopher, Savannah, or their expected child under any circumstances whatsoever. Violation of the order meant immediate, mandatory incarceration without bail.
During those weeks, Christopher dedicated himself entirely to his wife’s physical and emotional recovery. He stepped back from his eighty-hour workweeks, renegotiating his responsibilities at the firm to ensure he was home by dinner every single night. He cooked balanced meals, attended every single prenatal checkup, and sat with Savannah for hours, listening as she slowly reclaimed the voice she had been forced to suppress for years.

The fear that had once defined their daily existence slowly melted away, replaced by the joyful, chaotic anticipation of building a nursery. They painted the walls a soft, warm cream, assembled the crib together, and placed the little pink cashmere blanket—the one Christopher had dropped on the floor that fateful Wednesday afternoon—right in the center of the rocking chair.
The past could not be erased, but the future was entirely their own.
