Chapter 8 - Touchdown

Flight 247 touched down on Runway 4R at JFK with a smooth, effortless chirp of landing gear kissing concrete. The reverse thrusters roared to life, pressing passengers gently forward into their shoulder harnesses as the Airbus decelerated through the rainy New York night.
The cabin erupted into the familiar, rustling symphony of unzipping backpacks, clicking seatbelts, and overhead bins snapping open.
In row four, Cynthia Hale was already standing in the aisle, her face twisted into a mask of bitter resentment, eager to push her way off the plane and find an airline manager to scream at. But when she tried to move forward, Purser Vanessa was standing firmly at the bulkhead curtain, blocking the aisle with professional grace.
"First-class passengers with priority connections, please allow Ms. Morgan to disembark first," Vanessa announced over the intercom, her voice clear, confident, and entirely devoid of its earlier arrogance.
Elise gathered her battered leather tote bag, slipped it over her shoulder, and stood up. She looked down the aisle and caught Cynthia Hale’s eyes. Cynthia glared at her with the white-hot intensity of a thousand burning suns, but Elise didn't flinch, smile, or offer a parting remark. She simply walked past her with the effortless, unbothered grace of someone who owned the air beneath their feet.
At the aircraft door, Captain Marcus and Vanessa stood waiting to bid farewell.
"Safe travels in New York, Ms. Morgan," Marcus said, offering a crisp, respectful salute. "And thank you for... well, for handling a messy situation with extraordinary restraint."

"Keep the planes on schedule, Captain, and keep your crew focused on manifests instead of wardrobes," Elise replied, stepping across the threshold onto the jet bridge. "I'll see you at the board meeting next Tuesday."
"Yes, ma'am," Vanessa said, smiling genuinely. "Have a wonderful evening."
