Chapter 9 - A New Tradition

The following Thanksgiving, exactly one year after the incident that nearly shattered the family, the Whitmore estate was filled not with the stifling, tense atmosphere of forced obligation, but with genuine laughter, the rich aroma of roasted turkey and sage, and the chaotic, joyful energy of a real home.

This time, there was no confusion over the guest list.

When Claire, Daniel, and Mia arrived at noon, the front door was opened wide by Frank himself, who scooped Mia up into the air with a booming laugh that echoed through the high ceilings of the foyer.

“Welcome home, my little sunflower!” Frank declared, spinning her around as Mia shrieked with delight.

Inside, the dining room looked magnificent. The massive mahogany table was set for twenty, but the seating arrangement was entirely different. At the head sat Frank, with Mia placed securely right beside him in her chair by the window, bathed in the soft, golden light of the autumn sun. Beside Mia sat Daniel, and right next to him sat Claire, her hand resting comfortably against the polished wood.

Across the table, Eleanor moved gracefully among the guests, pouring wine and chatting easily with relatives. When she caught Claire’s eye across the room, she didn't offer the tight, brittle smile of the past. She offered a genuine, warm nod of mutual respect and affection.

As dinner was served, Frank stood up from his seat, tapping his water glass lightly with a silver spoon to quiet the room.

“Before we begin our meal,” Frank said, his voice carrying the deep, resonant warmth of a patriarch at peace, “I want to take a moment to reflect on what we are truly thankful for this year.”

He reached behind his chair and tapped the wall affectionately. There, framed side-by-side beneath protective glass, hung two priceless pieces of art: a crumpled paper turkey with orange feathers and uneven lettering, and a brightly colored drawing of a king cat named Sir Paws-a-Lot.

“We are thankful for grace,” Frank continued, looking around the table at his family. “We are thankful for honesty, for forgiveness, and for the people who remind us that a house is only as warm as the love you allow inside its walls.”

He raised his glass toward Claire and Mia. “To family—not just by blood, but by choice, by loyalty, and by heart.”

“To family,” the entire table chorused in unison, glasses clinking together in a harmonious symphony of celebration.
