Chapter 4 - The Selection in the Gallery

When I hurried back up the spiral staircase and slipped through the service doors into the main dining hall, my pulse was still racing a mile a minute. My hands felt warm where Adrian’s fingers had brushed against mine, a phantom sensation that refused to fade. I quickly adjusted my apron, smoothed down my dark hair, and stepped into the grand marble gallery just as the grandfather clock finished its twelfth stroke.

The seven women were already gathered in a semicircle around the massive mahogany table in the center of the room. Grant Mercer stood beside them, holding a polished silver clipboard, looking like an executioner at a royal court.

At the head of the table stood Adrian Vale.

He had reclaimed his mask of absolute detachment, his charcoal suit fitting him like second skin, his face carved from cold stone. But as I slipped quietly into the shadows near the velvet draperies, his gaze flicked across the room for a fraction of a second—just long enough to find me.

"Time is up," Adrian announced, his voice carrying effortlessly across the cavernous room. "You have all toured the estate. You have all seen the accumulated wealth, the power, and the history housed within these walls. Now, state your choices."

Caroline Wells stepped forward first, a triumphant smirk playing on her lips. She had clearly coordinated her move with military precision.

"I choose the Mediterranean shipping ledger and the corresponding stake in the Delaware docks," Caroline declared, her voice ringing with absolute confidence. "It’s a strategic alliance, Adrian. My family brings the ports; you bring the security. It’s a marriage of empires."

Grant Mercer made a brief note on his clipboard without looking up.

Next was Vanessa Vance. She stepped up, smoothing the gold fabric of her gown. "I choose the South Jersey land grants currently held in the Vale portfolio. Real estate is the only currency that never loses its value. It secures a political foundation that neither of us can ever lose."

One by one, the women stepped forward. Lauren chose the diamond-encrusted Victorian necklace—a pure liquid asset worth millions. Melissa chose the private art collection housed in the east wing. The remaining three women chose high-yield offshore accounts, luxury fleet holdings, and prime commercial real estate in downtown Philadelphia.

When the last woman finished speaking, a self-satisfied silence filled the room. Every single one of them smiled, convinced they had played the game perfectly. They had chosen gold, land, diamonds, and power—the exact things powerful men expected ambitious women to want.

Adrian listened to every choice without a single change in expression. When the final woman stepped back into line, he turned his slate-gray eyes slowly across the group.

"Diamonds," Adrian said softly, his voice dripping with cold irony. "Paintings. Cars. Land. Antiques. And enough money to vanish forever."

He walked slowly around the mahogany table, his footsteps echoing in the vast gallery like a drumbeat.

"You all played the game correctly," Adrian continued, stopping directly in front of Caroline Wells. "You looked at my estate, and you saw an ATM. You saw an insurance policy. You saw a ladder to climb higher into the Philadelphia syndicate."

Caroline’s confident smirk faltered slightly. "Isn't that what this is, Adrian? A business arrangement?"

"No," Adrian replied sharply. "This was a test to see if any of you actually understood the man you were trying to marry."

He turned away from them, his broad shoulders rigid, and walked toward the tall arched windows overlooking the dark, sprawling lawns outside. The silence in the room grew heavy, oppressive, and utterly terrifying. None of the women dared to breathe. They exchanged nervous glances, realizing too late that the rules of the game had just changed entirely.

"Grant," Adrian called out without turning around.

"Yes, Mr. Vale?" Grant stepped forward, his pen poised.

"Did everyone make a selection?"

"Yes, sir," Grant replied, consulting his clipboard. "All seven candidates have chosen their assets."

Adrian turned slowly, his dark, piercing eyes sweeping past the rich heiresses, past the glittering diamonds and golden gowns, and locking directly onto me where I stood frozen in the shadows by the velvet draperies.

"Except one," Adrian said quietly.

May you like

Every head in the room whipped around in unison. Seven pairs of shocked, disbelieving eyes followed Adrian’s gaze across the marble floor until they landed squarely on me—the plain, five-foot-four servant girl in the simple black dress with her hair tied in a low knot and a silver tray clutched in her trembling hands.

Caroline Wells let out a sharp, incredulous laugh.
