Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

A year after walking away from the darkness of the Falcone estate, Clara stood on the sun-drenched observation deck of the Adler Planetarium, looking out across the breathtaking panoramic expanse of the Chicago skyline.

The afternoon sun danced brilliantly across the blue waters of Lake Michigan, while the towering glass skyscrapers of downtown shimmered like diamonds against the clear blue sky.

She was entirely free.

The bakery on the West Side was thriving, expanding its operations to supply fresh goods to half a dozen neighborhood cafés across the city. Her relationship with Peter and his family was stronger than ever, rooted in mutual respect, honesty, and shared survival. She no longer lived in constant fear of ringing phones, midnight knocks, or the suffocating expectations of a world built on blood and deceit.

Footsteps approached softly from behind.

Martha stepped up beside her, leaning against the stone railing and smiling warmly as she followed Clara’s gaze across the horizon.

"Beautiful view, isn't it?" Martha murmured, adjusting her scarf against the gentle spring breeze.

"It really is," Clara replied, taking a deep, satisfying breath of the fresh lake air. "For a long time, I thought this city was a cage—that every street, every building, and every shadow belonged to someone else."

"And now?" Martha asked gently.

Clara turned her head, looking out over the endless expanse of blue water where the sky met the horizon in a seamless, unbroken line.

"Now," Clara said, her voice steady, resonant, and filled with radiant strength, "I realize the city was never a cage. It was just a canvas waiting for me to write my own story."

She smiled brightly, turning away from the railing to walk hand-in-hand with Martha toward the exit, ready to embrace whatever bright, unwritten chapters lay ahead—fully healed, entirely unbroken, and forever free.
