Chapter 9 - THE CEREMONY

Friday morning arrived.
I stood in front of a mirror.
My dress uniform fit differently now.
My body was weaker.
My legs still hurt.
But the uniform looked exactly as I'd imagined when I was seventeen.
Captain Reynolds stood behind me.
"You ready?"
I took a breath.
"Yes."
The ceremony began beneath a clear morning sky.
Families filled the seats.
Officers stood in formation.
When my name was called, I stepped forward.
One step.
Then another.
Slowly.
Painfully.
But I walked.
My parents cried.
Captain Reynolds smiled.
And somewhere beyond the ceremony grounds, Victor was being transported to court.
I received the commission.
The insignia was placed on my uniform.
For a moment, I forgot everything.
The staircase.
The crowbar.
The hospital.
The money.
The lies.
I simply stood there.
An officer.
Not Victor's wife.
Not Patricia's daughter-in-law.
Not a woman waiting for permission.
Me.
After the ceremony, Detective Harris approached.
"There's something you should see."
He handed me a sealed envelope.
"What is it?"
"The final financial report."
Inside was a list of recovered funds.
Most of my money had been frozen before it could disappear.
Not all of it.
But enough.
Then I saw one final transaction.
A payment made from Patricia's account.
Recipient:
Victor Marshall.
Date:
The night before the attack.
Amount:
$25,000.
Description:
Completion payment.
I stared at it.
Completion.
The attack had been treated as a transaction.
A job.
A task.
A planned event.
I closed the folder.
"What happens now?"
Harris said:
"Trial."
I looked toward the ceremony grounds.
People were taking photographs.
Children were laughing.
The flag moved gently in the wind.
For the first time in weeks, I felt something I hadn't expected.
Peace.
Not because everything was fixed.
May you like
Because I knew the truth.
