Chapter 5 - THE SURGERY AND THE THREAT

The morning of my surgery arrived with a dense, freezing fog covering Philadelphia.

Damian had posted four armed men outside my floor, disguised as hospital security. Dottie held Maisie in the waiting room while the surgical team prepped me.

Before they wheeled me into the operating theater, Damian walked alongside my gurney down the quiet corridor.

"Maisie will be safe," he promised, his voice low and firm. "I give you my word as a Russo."

"Don't let them take her," I whispered, tears brimming in my eyes. "She's all I have."

"Focus on staying alive, Clara," he said, reaching out to gently touch my hand. His skin was warm against my cold, trembling fingers. "Leave the rest to me."

The surgery lasted six agonizing hours.

While I lay unconscious under the bright lights of the operating room, chaos unfolded three floors below.

A black SUV pulled into the hospital parking garage. Two men wearing dark raincoats stepped out, heading straight for the service elevators. They carried silenced weapons concealed inside duffel bags. Their objective was simple: eliminate Clara Vance before she could speak to Damian and reveal the paper trail Victor had left behind.

They didn't know Damian had already anticipated the move.

As the two men stepped into the 4th-floor hallway, Marco and three Russo security officers stepped out from the side doors. No words were exchanged. The struggle was quick, silent, and brutal, handled entirely within the secluded service corridor away from public eyes.

When Damian walked into the interrogation room in the basement of a Russo-owned warehouse an hour later, one of the hitmen was already bleeding on the concrete floor.

"Who sent you?" Damian asked calmly, stripping off his leather gloves.

The man spat blood onto the floor, sneering. "You think you can go legit, Damian? Your father built this city on blood! Cousin Julian isn't going to let you hand our family over to the feds!"

Damian’s eyes darkened. Julian. Victor's son. The cousin who had pretended to support Damian's transition into legal corporate enterprise.

"Julian made a mistake touching my hospital," Damian said coldly.
