Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

Three months later, the spring flowers bloomed across the Moretti estate in a riot of crimson, yellow, and white.

The air was warm, carrying the sweet scent of blooming roses and freshly cut grass. On the west lawn, beneath the sprawling branches of the ancient oak tree, a small picnic blanket had been laid out on the emerald turf.

Alessandro Moretti sat cross-legged on the grass, his black suit jacket discarded over a nearby teak bench, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His hair was slightly tousled by the breeze, and a relaxed, unhurried expression rested on his face—a look no one in the city would ever have believed he was capable of wearing.

A few feet away, three-year-old Clara was chasing a bright red rubber ball across the lawn, her laughter ringing out like bells in the quiet afternoon.

Marta sat on the edge of the blanket, pouring tea from a porcelain pot, smiling warmly as she watched her daughter run.

“She wears you out, doesn’t she, Signore?” Marta asked, handing a porcelain cup to the Don.

Alessandro took the cup, his gray eyes softening as he watched Clara trip over her own feet and tumble harmlessly into the grass, giggling instead of crying.

“She has no sense of tactical positioning,” Alessandro dryly remarked, taking a sip of the tea. “She charges right into open ground without cover.”

“Children usually do when they feel safe,” Marta replied softly.

Alessandro fell silent. He looked down at his hand, where the silver pocket watch rested on the blanket beside him. The case was still scratched near the hinge, still worn smooth by the thumbs of men who had lived by violence.

Yet, as a small pair of muddy shoes trotted over and stopped right beside his knee, Alessandro felt no urge to reach for a weapon, no need to scan the horizon for shadows.

Clara leaned down, pressing her warm, grubby hands against his cheek, leaving a faint streak of garden dirt on his skin.

“Uncle,” she whispered conspiratorially. “The clock is singing again.”

Alessandro smiled—a real, unforced smile that reached his eyes. He reached up, gently lifting her onto his lap, and pulled his father’s watch from the blanket, holding it to her ear so she could hear the steady, rhythmic ticking of time moving forward.

The house was no longer silent. The shadows had not vanished entirely from the world outside their gates, but inside the walls of the Moretti estate, the coldest man in the city had finally found something worth fighting to keep.
