Chapter 8 - The Zurich Counter-Attack

The cyber assault from Zurich wasn't just a minor firewall probe; it was a coordinated, full-scale digital blitz aimed at crippling Cain Global’s automated cargo routing systems.

For thirty-six hours straight, the seventy-first floor became a war room. Marcus and his elite IT security team worked in frantic shifts, isolating infected sub-networks while Tristan and I authorized emergency liquidity transfers to lock down our European banking accounts.

"They're trying to freeze our container tracking database," I said, typing furiously on my terminal as lines of code scrolled past my monitor. "If the automated cranes in Antwerp lose their digital manifests, three hundred thousand tons of perishable cargo will rot on the docks by Sunday."

"Not on my watch," Tristan growled, standing behind my chair, his hand resting firmly on the backrest as he watched the data streams. "Marcus, route our entire secondary backup through the military-grade encryption tunnel we set up after the merger last year."

"Doing it now, Mr. Cain," Marcus replied, his fingers flying across his keyboard like lightning. "Firewall integrity holding... routing traffic... and... got it! We just locked out their IP addresses. The Vane Group is blind."

A collective cheer went up among the IT staff in the bullpen.

I let out a long, shuddering breath, slumping back in my chair. My shoulders felt as though they were carrying a sack of wet cement, but a triumphant grin spread across my face.

"We won," I whispered.

"We didn't just win," Tristan said, a dangerous, predatory smile touching his lips. "We counter-attacked."

He tapped a key on his desk terminal, pulling up a public financial wire feed.

"While Marcus was blocking their firewall, I authorized an immediate hostile takeover acquisition of Vane Group’s primary logistics supplier in Germany. We just bought their entire supply chain for thirty cents on the dollar."

I stared at him in absolute awe. "You gutted them from the inside out."

"Rule number two of logistics," Tristan said smoothly, leaning down so his lips were dangerously close to my ear. "Never let an enemy keep their supply lines open."

By Saturday morning, the board of directors received an emergency dossier detailing the Vane Group's failed cyber attack and Cain Global’s swift, devastating counter-acquisition. By noon, the Zurich consortium formally withdrew its board proxies, signaling an unconditional surrender.

The war was over. The empire was secure.

And for the first time in months, the seventy-first floor was wonderfully, peacefully quiet.
