Chapter 8 - The Ledger Unlocked

Three days later, the storm inside the Callahan estate had temporarily subsided, though the tension hummed beneath the floorboards like an active fault line.
In the high-security basement archive—a subterranean vault lined with steel filing cabinets, encrypted mainframe servers, and rows of historical ledgers—Emily sat at a heavy oak desk with a digital tablet glowing in front of her. Her brown hair was tied back in its usual tight knot, her face illuminated by the cool blue light of the screen as she rapidly cross-referenced scanned financial documents with federal indictment leaks.
I walked down the metal stairs, carrying two cups of black coffee, and set one down beside her elbow without a word.
She didn't look up immediately, but her fingers paused over the keyboard. “Your caporegime, Marcus, is currently nursing a broken jaw in cell block B, according to the security feeds I hacked into yesterday.”
“Marcus is lucky he still has a head attached to his shoulders,” I replied, leaning against the edge of the steel shelving unit, sipping my coffee. “Did you find what you were looking for?”
Emily finally turned her head, looking up at me with a triumphant, sharp expression.
“Better than what I was looking for,” she said, tapping the screen. “I didn't just find your father’s old offshore laundering accounts. I found the master encryption key linking Marcus Vance and three other high-ranking syndicate members to an unauthorized federal informant pipeline. They weren't just waiting for you to look weak, Richard—Marcus has been feeding information to the FBI for over two years, setting you up to take the fall for the entire organization so he could take over the throne.”
The revelation hit me like a splash of cold water.
All this time, I thought the federal pressure closing in around us was just standard investigative work following my father's death. But it was an inside job—a coup orchestrated by the very man screaming the loudest about loyalty.
“Marcus,” I murmured, my jaw tightening as the pieces clicked into place.
“He used my father’s murder as a smoke screen to cover his own tracks,” Emily continued, her voice steady, though her hands trembled slightly with vindication. “He’s the one who gave the order to plant the bomb a decade ago, Richard. Not your father. Marcus.”
I stared at her, the room around us suddenly feeling entirely still.
For ten years, I had carried the guilt of a blood debt I didn't personally order, believing my family name was inherently cursed with monstrous cruelty. And for ten years, Emily had sought vengeance against the wrong ghost.
“Are you certain?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
“The digital signatures match his private offshore routing codes,” she said firmly, pulling up a detailed financial trail on the screen. “I have absolute, irrefutable proof. The FBI has the file as of twenty minutes ago—sent directly from an encrypted drop I set up this morning.”
Before I could process the massive implications of her actions, the heavy security alarms throughout the Barrington estate suddenly began to wail, flashing a blinding, rhythmic crimson across the concrete walls.

The trap had sprung. Marcus’s loyalists had launched a desperate, bloody counter-assault to break him out of the holding cells and seize control of the estate before my men could execute the purge.
