Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Traitor

I walked down the grand marble staircase slowly, my leather shoes clicking with rhythmic precision against the stone.

Salvatore backed up until his spine hit the mahogany front door.

“Gabriel… listen to me!” Salvatore whimpered, raising his shaking hands in surrender. “It was the Morellos! They forced me into this! They threatened to kill my family if I didn't help them eliminate you!”

“Save your breath, Salvatore,” I said, stopping five feet away from him. “Isabella already told us everything. We have the wire transfers from Zurich. We have the white bottle. And we have your voice recorded on the phone wiretap from an hour ago.”

Salvatore’s face twisted into an expression of desperate, pathetic fury.

“You were ruining this family, Gabriel!” he screamed, tears of rage welling in his eyes. “You turned us into businessmen! You abandoned the street deals! You refused to deal in drugs! You made us soft!”

“I made us legitimate,” I replied coldly. “I built an empire that doesn't require our children to go to prison. But you were too greedy and too stupid to see the difference.”

I reached into my inner jacket pocket and pulled out a thick envelope of legal documents, tossing it onto the floor at his feet.

“What is this?” Salvatore stammered.

“Every piece of evidence linking you to thirty years of racketeering, extortion, and attempted murder,” I said. “It has already been delivered to the United States District Attorney’s office in Boston.”

Salvatore stared at the envelope in sheer horror. “You… you went to the feds?”

“In our business, family traitors don't get the honor of a quiet bullet,” I whispered, leaning down close to his face. “You will spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security federal prison, stripped of your name, your money, and your freedom.”

Sirens began to wail in the distance, growing louder with every passing second as police cruisers sped up Federal Hill toward the estate.

Matteo stepped forward and grabbed Salvatore by his collar, dragging him toward the door as the old man wept and cursed my name into the night.
