Chapter 9 - The Gala at the Drake

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel glittered under massive crystal chandeliers, filled with the elite of Chicago’s financial and political spheres. Tuxedos, designer evening gowns, champagne flutes clinking in rhythmic harmony, and polite, hollow laughter created an atmosphere of supreme luxury and untouchable power.
At the center of it all stood Arthur Sterling, immaculate in a bespoke charcoal suit, shaking hands with city councilmen and smiling warmly for the flashbulbs of society photographers.
Nobody in the room suspected that tucked neatly into the inner lining of a modest black evening dress worn by a quiet, unassuming catering assistant slipping through the service corridors was a loaded Glock 19 and a digital decryption drive.
Maeve moved through the labyrinthine service halls behind the grand ballroom with quiet, predatory grace. Her heart thudded against her ribs, but her hands were like ice. She had bypassed security by intercepting a catering delivery truck at the loading dock—a trick she had learned from watching Moretti's logistics patterns earlier that evening.
Through the service door window, she spotted Sterling stepping up to the mahogany podium to deliver his keynote campaign speech.
Before Sterling could take the microphone, the grand double doors of the ballroom suddenly groaned and slammed open with a deafening bang.
The music cut off instantly. Gasps rippled through the crowd of hundreds of wealthy socialites and politicians as all heads turned toward the entrance.
Stepping through the threshold was Adrian Moretti.
He was bruised, pale from blood loss, and his overcoat was stained dark around the ribs, but he walked with the terrifying, unstoppable momentum of an avenging god. Flanked by two armed loyalists who had managed to rally to his side outside, Adrian strode down the center aisle of the ballroom as if he owned the building, the heavy iron chain still coiled securely beneath his sleeve.
“Arthur!” Adrian’s voice boomed across the silent, terrified ballroom, echoing off the gilded ceiling. “Don't start the party without me!”
Panic erupted instantly. Women screamed, glass shattered as champagne flutes were dropped, and security guards scrambled frantically toward the stage, only to freeze when Adrian’s men leveled automatic weapons across the crowd.
On the stage, Arthur Sterling’s face drained of all color. He backed away from the podium, his hand trembling as he reached frantically for the concealed panic button beneath the wood.
“Stop him!” Sterling shrieked to his private detail. “Kill him! Shoot him right now!”
Before the guards could raise their sidearms, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the VIP balcony directly above the stage.
Sterling froze, looking up.
Maeve stood atop the elevated balcony overlooking the entire ballroom, holding the heavy Glock pointed with absolute, unshakeable steadiness directly between Sterling’s eyes.
“Move your hand another inch toward that button, Sterling, and I’ll save the federal marshals the paperwork,” Maeve called out, her voice cutting through the panic of the entire room like a razor blade.
Sterling’s hand hovered inches from the console, sweat beading heavily on his forehead. “Who the hell are you? Guards, get her—!”
“She’s Leo Carter’s sister,” Adrian called out from the floor, stepping up to the base of the stage and resting his hand on the wood, his dark eyes burning with lethal intent. “And she brought a very special present for your campaign portfolio.”
Maeve didn't hesitate. With her left hand, she reached into her pocket, pulled out the secure flash drive, and plugged it directly into the master AV control console on the balcony. With three rapid keystrokes, she overrode the ballroom’s main projection screens.
Instantly, the massive projector screens behind the stage flickered to life.
Instead of Sterling’s campaign slogan, the towering display flashed high-resolution financial ledgers, encrypted offshore transfer records, audio transcripts of corrupt payoffs, and timestamped security footage from the night Leo Carter was abducted—showing Arthur Sterling’s personal enforcers loading Leo’s briefcase into an unmarked van.
The murmurs in the ballroom exploded into a deafening roar of outrage and terror. Politicians backed away from Sterling as if he carried the plague, and several prominent donors dropped their champagne glasses in horror.
Sterling looked up at the screen, then down at Maeve, and finally across at Adrian. His composure completely shattered. He lunged frantically for a pistol hidden inside the podium—
Bang.
A single shot cracked through the ballroom. The bullet grazed the polished mahogany of the podium just inches from Sterling’s fingers, shattering the wood into splinters.
“Don't,” Maeve said coldly, her finger steady on the trigger.
A moment later, heavy tactical boots echoed up the grand marble staircase behind the ballroom. Federal Marshals, led by senior agents alerted by the decrypted data packet automatically broadcasted to the FBI field office moments prior, flooded the room from every exit, weapons drawn, shouting orders.
“Federal Agents! Nobody move!”
May you like
Sterling was swarmed instantly, slammed onto the mahogany floor in handcuffs as the federal agents secured the entire stage.
Maeve lowered the pistol slowly, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the overwhelming adrenaline finally began to ebb from her veins. She turned and walked down the grand staircase toward the floor, where Adrian stood waiting amidst the chaos of flashing federal badges and subdued panic.
