Chapter 3 - The Broken Vow

Before Lena’s hands could make contact with my shattered body, a heavy shadow swept across my vision.
Caleb stepped between us.
With a powerful move, he caught Lena by both wrists in mid-air, throwing his weight back to halt her momentum. Lena screamed like a wild animal, thrashing violently, her expensive wedding dress tearing along the side seam as she tried to scratch at Caleb’s face.
“Let go of me! Let me finish it!” she shrieked, her voice completely devoid of sanity. “She ruined my life! She ruined everything!”
“Hold her!” Caleb roared toward the venue’s security team.
Three heavy-set security officers rushed across the wet concrete, grabbing Lena’s arms and securing her firmly behind her back. She struggled against their grip, her hair coming undone from its elaborate bridal updo, wet strands hanging wildly across her face.
The entire courtyard was in absolute chaos. Guests were shouting, frantically calling emergency services on their phones, while others rushed toward the exits to distance themselves from the horrific scene.
My body finally gave out. The combination of hypothermia, physical trauma from the fall into the pool, and the sheer, overwhelming psychological shock proved too much. My knees buckled beneath me.
I collapsed toward the stone tiles, but before I hit the ground, Caleb caught me with both arms, carefully avoiding my braced right side. He gently lowered me down, pulling a heavy dry tablecloth off a nearby catering stand and wrapping it securely around my shivering shoulders.
“Tessa, stay with me,” Caleb said urgently, his voice trembling as he looked into my eyes. His hands were shaking. “An ambulance is on its way. Just focus on breathing, okay? Don't look at her.”
I looked into Caleb’s eyes. For months, I had known him only as my sister’s wealthy, handsome, and somewhat quiet fiancé—a successful corporate attorney who had seemed completely smitten with Lena’s outgoing charm. Now, seeing the deep horror and profound sorrow in his gaze, I realized he was just as much a victim of her elaborate deception as I was.
“Why...?” I choked out, a cold tear cutting through the pool water on my cheek. “Why did she hate me so much?”
Caleb swallowed hard, his eyes filling with tears of anger. “She didn't hate you because of anything you did, Tessa. She hated you because she couldn't control you. She’s a sociopath.”
Beside us, my father finally moved. The towering, proud man who had spent his entire life building a reputation in the business world looked broken. He stepped toward Lena, who was still struggling against the security guards.
“Lena...” my father said, his voice cracking, tears streaming down his weathered cheeks. “Is Sarah telling the truth? Did you... did you really cut the brakes on your sister’s car?”
Lena stopped thrashing for a brief second. She looked up at our father, her expression cold, hollow, and devoid of any remorse.
“She deserved it,” Lena said flatly, her voice eerie in its calm. “You always gave her the attention. You bought her that stupid art studio setup. You praised her design work. What did I get? You just expected me to marry well! So I found Caleb. I did what you wanted! And then she comes around, looking all pitiful with her little art career, taking the focus off my engagement!”
She scoffed, spitting on the ground near my father’s shoes.
“I only regret that she survived the crash.”
A collective gasp of utter horror echoed from the few remaining guests and staff. My father stumbled back as if he had been struck in the chest with an axe. He placed a hand over his heart, breathing heavily, completely crushed by the realization of what he had raised.
Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as emergency vehicles sped up the winding estate driveway.
Within minutes, red and blue lights illuminated the grand marble archway of the Belvedere Estate. Two police cruisers and an advanced life support ambulance screeched to a halt on the gravel drive.
Paramedics carrying heavy medical bags rushed through the venue gates, guided by the estate coordinator.
“Over here!” Caleb shouted, waving them down. “She was pushed into the pool! She has a severe prior shoulder injury—a full reconstruction that was re-injured during the fall!”
The paramedics immediately knelt beside me. A female medic gently assessed my vital signs while her partner stabilized my right arm, carefully cutting away the wet medical brace to examine the damage beneath.
As the air hit my exposed shoulder, a fresh wave of excruciating pain surged through my nervous system. I screamed, pulling back involuntarily.
“Easy, Tessa, easy,” the female paramedic said softly, placing an oxygen mask over my nose and mouth. “We’re giving you something for the pain right now. Hold still.”
As they administered an IV painkiller, two police officers walked briskly over to where the security guards were holding Lena.
Sarah, still sobbing uncontrollably, stepped forward alongside Caleb.
“Officer,” Caleb said, his voice ringing out clear and authoritative across the courtyard. “I want to report an attempted murder and a felony assault. My ex-fiancée, Lena Vance, just pushed her disabled sister into the deep end of the pool, fully aware of her physical condition.”
Sarah stepped up, wiping her face. “And I want to give a formal statement. Last night, Lena confessed to me that three months ago, she deliberately cut the brake lines on Tessa’s vehicle, which resulted in the crash that caused her injury.”
The lead police officer looked at Sarah, then at Lena, his face setting into a dark, solemn frown. He pulled out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.
“Lena Vance,” the officer said, stepping behind her. “You are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated assault, and domestic violence. You have the right to remain silent...”
As the metal cuffs snapped tightly around Lena’s wrists, she suddenly panicked. The cold reality of legal consequences finally breached her delusion.
“Dad! Mom! Help me!” she screamed, wrestling against the officer’s hold as they began dragging her toward the police cruiser. “Tell them they’re lying! Dad, call our lawyers! You can’t let them take me! DAD!”
My father turned his back on her. He didn't say a word. He simply walked over to my stretcher, grabbing my left hand and pressing it against his forehead, weeping silently.
My mother remained collapsed on the grass, staring at the floor in utter shock, completely paralyzed by the destruction of her family.
As the paramedics lifted my stretcher to roll me toward the ambulance, I glanced over my shoulder one last time.
Lena was being forced into the back seat of the police car. Her white dress was stained with dirt and pool water, her tiara tilted awkwardly on her messy hair, her face contorted in a terrifying mix of rage and terror. The door slammed shut, cutting off her screams.
Caleb walked alongside my stretcher all the way to the back of the ambulance.

“I’m coming to the hospital with you,” he said softly, holding my left hand securely. “I’m not leaving your side, Tessa.”
I closed my eyes as the ambulance doors closed, the steady beep of the heart monitor and the fading sound of police sirens carrying me away into the dark, uncertain night.
