Chapter 6 - The Counter-Strike

The conference room on the fourteenth floor of a sleek high-rise office building in downtown Austin smelled of fresh coffee, expensive leather, and industrial-strength printer toner. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the Texas Capitol building rose into a brilliant autumn sky, its copper dome gleaming in the October sun.
At the center of the mahogany conference table sat a stack of thick legal binders, color-coded tabs protruding from their edges like military insignia.
Zoe sat at the head of the table, dressed in a sharp, tailored charcoal pantsuit that she had purchased specifically for this morning. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek, low ponytail, and her expression was a mask of cold, unyielding professionalism.
To her right sat Carter, looking significantly healthier than he had three months ago. With Zoe’s financial backing and strict oversight, he had spent the last ninety days living in a modest extended-stay apartment, attending weekly therapy sessions, and working directly with a forensic accountant to trace every dollar Maria had siphoned from the estate.
Across the table sat a woman who looked like she had been carved out of northern ice.
Attorney Vanessa Sterling, a senior partner at Sterling & Vance Litigation, adjusted her wire-rimmed glasses and flipped open the primary audit report.
"Well," Vanessa said, her voice crisp and dry as autumn leaves. "I have to hand it to you, Ms. Miller. Your stepmother’s financial architect was remarkably thorough—and remarkably criminal. By forging the quitclaim deeds and leveraging the original trust property against fraudulent commercial loans, Ms. Davis-Miller didn't just breach fiduciary duty. She committed grand larceny and wire fraud across state lines."
Carter winced, staring down at his hands. He didn't dare look at his daughter.
Zoe didn't blink. "Can we freeze the assets, Ms. Sterling?"
"They're already frozen," Vanessa replied calmly, tapping a printed bank directive with her manicured fingernail. "As of 8:00 AM this morning, all corporate accounts associated with Maria’s consulting firm, as well as the personal checking accounts held by both Maria and Hazel, have been locked pending a court-ordered receivership. Furthermore, the mortgage holder on 414 Elm Street has been notified of the underlying trust fraud. The foreclosure auction scheduled for next week has been enjoined."
A slow, victorious smile touched the corners of Zoe’s mouth.
"And Maria?" Zoe asked. "Where is she right now?"
Vanessa smiled—a sharp, predatory expression that belonged in a boardroom thriller.
"She’s currently sitting in the lobby of her primary bank branch, trying to withdraw funds for a boutique shopping trip, only to discover that her platinum debit card has been declined due to a total account suspension. Her lawyer has already called my office three times this morning, screaming about an emergency injunction hearing."
At that exact moment, the heavy oak door of the conference room swung open.
A breathless, flustered paralegal stepped inside, holding a tablet computer.
"Ms. Sterling? You have an urgent visitor in reception. It's Ms. Maria Davis-Miller. She bypassed the security desk and is demanding to speak with her husband and stepdaughter immediately."
Carter flinched violently, shrinking back into his chair.

Zoe stood up, smoothing the front of her jacket. She looked down at her father, then across the table at the high-priced attorney who had agreed to take their case on contingency.
"Let her in," Zoe said.
