Chapter 10 - The Gala of Reckoning

My father and I took the red-eye flight to Chicago the following morning.

Through the intervention of General Campbell and the Judge Advocate General’s office, we were granted immediate access to the evidence room of the federal courthouse where Meredith Ashford was being held without bail.

On the steel table sat an old, heavy metal lockbox that had been recovered from the bank vault.

Inside were three classified operational logs, several personal audio cassettes, and an encrypted hard drive marked with Department of Defense serial numbers.

“Why would Meredith have military intelligence logs?” Jonathan asked, bewildered, leaning over the table. “She was an interior designer and a socialite. She didn't know anything about military logistics.”

Colonel Myers, who had flown in to oversee the chain of custody, stepped forward with a pair of surgical gloves.

“She didn't know about military operations, Mr. Ashford,” Myers said grimly. “But her brother did. Her older brother, Richard Finch—Gregory Finch’s cousin—was a senior civilian procurement officer for the defense logistics agency ten years ago.”

The pieces of the puzzle began to click into place with terrifying precision.

“Adrian’s squad wasn't just ambushed,” Myers continued, loading one of the audio tapes into a player. “Adrian’s company was sent to an abandoned outpost to investigate defective body armor and faulty communication equipment that had been supplied by a subcontracted shell company.”

The tape crackled. A voice filled the small room—clear, steady, and unmistakably Adrian’s.

*“This is Staff Sergeant Adrian Rusk, recording on October 14th. We inspected the ceramic plates delivered to Forward Operating Base Cobra. Over sixty percent of the plates are cracked internally. The communications relays are failing under normal operating temperatures. Someone at the procurement division cleared these shipments knowing they were scrap. If we take fire out here, these vests won't stop a nine-millimeter, let alone a rifle round. I am bringing three samples and the shipping manifests back with us on the extraction convoy tomorrow.”*

The tape ended with the distant thump of mortar fire and Adrian’s calm command: *“Mount up. Squad, on me.”*

I sat down on the metal chair, the breath knocked completely out of my lungs.

Adrian hadn't just died saving his men from an ambush. He had been targeted. He had uncovered a multi-million-dollar procurement fraud run by Meredith’s family, and when he died, Meredith had intercepted his personal effects to ensure those manifests and records never reached the light of day.
