Chapter 7 - The Paper Trail

The wind picked up, rustling through the canopy of the oaks, dropping red and gold leaves onto the hood of the white limousine. Nobody spoke. The silence was thick, toxic with the sudden realization of total defeat.
Jessica’s face transformed from rage to an ugly, frantic desperation. She lunged forward, taking the porch steps two at a time, her dirty dress bunching around her knees.
"Daniel!" she cried, reaching out to grab his sleeve. "Daniel, baby, listen to me! I didn't mean it! You know how stressed I get! My mother was in my ear all week, telling me we had to make a clean break, that we needed our independence! I was just repeating what she said! I love your mother! Margaret, you know I love you! I was going to call you right after the ceremony!"
Daniel didn't pull away violently. He simply stepped backward, letting her hands slip off his lapel as though she were nothing more than a passing shadow.
"Don't touch me, Jessica," he said, and the coldness in his tone was more absolute than any shout could have been. "You didn't just insult my mother. You didn't just lie to my face at the altar. Susan gave me more than the church video."
Jessica froze, one hand suspended in the air. "What are you talking about?"
Daniel pulled his phone from his tuxedo pocket. "Aunt Susan works in the municipal registry, Jessica. When she saw how nervous and isolated my mother had become over the last six months, she started looking into things. She looked into that 'exclusive financial management firm' you insisted we hire to handle our joint pre-nuptial agreements."
Jessica’s jaw went slack. The blood drained from her cheeks until she was as white as her bridal veil.
"Julian Croft," Daniel said, pronouncing the name like an obscenity. "Your 'second cousin' who was so generous with his investment advice. The man who sat at my table during the rehearsal dinner."
"Daniel, no..." Jessica whimpered, her hands dropping to her sides.
"Julian isn't your cousin, is he, Jessica?" Daniel said, his voice deadly calm. "He’s the man you’ve been seeing for three years. The man whose offshore accounts were designated to receive the liquidated assets of the Arthur Vance Trust the moment our marriage certificate was signed and the power of attorney transferred."
Richard Vance gasped, stepping forward, his face flushed with genuine shock. "What did you say? Julian Croft? Jessica, what is he talking about?"
Even Evelyn looked stunned. The parents, for all their snobbery and greed, were suddenly realizing that their daughter wasn't just ambitious—she was running a con that extended far beyond their control.

"Susan pulled the electronic filings this morning," Daniel said, turning his screen toward Richard. "Jessica forged my preliminary signature on the transfer covenants last Thursday. She was going to drain four million dollars from the firm’s development escrow by Monday afternoon and fly to Zurich. Isn't that right, Jessica? That’s why you couldn't have my mother at the wedding. Because if she had spoken to the bank trustees for even ten seconds, the entire fraud would have collapsed."
