Chapter 5 - The Trap Springing Shut

As evening descended over Houston, the oppressive heat began to break, but inside the sprawling River Oaks mansion, the air was suffocating.
Mark sped his Porsche up the circular driveway, slammed the brakes, and bolted out of the car. He rushed through the front entrance, his eyes wild and desperate.
“Daniela!” Mark roared, storming through the foyer. “Daniela, where are you?!”
The house was deathly quiet. There were no servants scurrying to greet him, no dinner waiting on the dining table. The grand estate felt hollow, stripped of its superficial warmth.
Mark burst into the master bedroom. The closet doors were wide open. Half of Daniela’s clothes, her jewelry box, and her personal belongings were completely gone. On the nightstand sat a single, neatly folded document.
Mark snatched it up with trembling hands. It was a formal petition for divorce, accompanied by a temporary restraining order barring him from approaching Daniela or entering any property registered in her name.
Before Mark could process the paper, his phone rang shrilly. He answered it instantly, hoping against hope.
“Mark Salgado?” a cold, formal voice asked on the other end.
“Yes! Who is this?” Mark demanded.
“This is Agent Miller with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, White-Collar Crime Division. We have an active warrant for your arrest in connection with wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement involving Salgado Holdings LLC. We are currently outside your residence. Please step out onto the front porch with your hands visible.”
Mark’s phone slipped from his numb fingers, clattering against the polished marble floor. He turned slowly toward the grand bedroom window, looking down through the glass.
Below, parked along the manicured driveway with their emergency lights flashing crimson and blue, were three federal law enforcement vehicles.
At that exact moment, Beatrice rushed into the bedroom, her face streaked with tears, her hair disheveled. “Mark! The police are downstairs! They’re seizing the bank accounts, they’re locking down the estate—everything is gone!”
Mark looked at his mother, his eyes wide with stark, unadulterated terror. The empire they had built on deceit, cruelty, and the exploitation of a quiet, unassuming woman had collapsed in less than twenty-four hours.

And miles away, sitting comfortably in a high-rise penthouse overlooking the glittering skyline of Houston, Daniela sipped her tea beside me, watching the city lights twinkle against the dark Texas sky.
The nightmare was finally over. The real work of justice was just beginning.
