Chapter 26 - The Unraveling of Marcus

Ten miles away, in the gravel parking lot behind the Sterling County Records Annex, Marcus Hayes sat in his silver Mercedes, the air conditioning blasting against his sweating palms. On the passenger seat lay the red-stamped foreclosure petition against Arthur Miller, ready to be submitted the moment the courthouse clock struck twelve.

His phone buzzed against the center console. The caller ID read: *ELEANOR.*

"Did she sign it?" Marcus demanded, pressing the phone to his ear without a greeting.

*"She didn't sign it yet,"* Eleanor’s voice came back, hurried but confident. *"She will. She’s terrified. File the lis pendens notice immediately. Once the stamp is on the electronic docket, text me a screenshot. I'll show it to Arthur before the music starts."*

"Eleanor, are you sure about this?" Marcus wiped his brow with a silk handkerchief. "The state auditor's vehicle was seen near the north orchard last night. My contact at the sheriff's department isn't answering his phone."

*"Sheriff Douglas is sitting in the third pew at the church right now, Marcus! Stop being a coward! File the paperwork and get to the reception before the entrance waltz. If you don't file it, the bank will call our commercial loan by Monday!"*

The call cut out. Marcus cursed under his breath, shoved the folder into his briefcase, and reached for the door handle.

Before his fingers could lift the latch, a heavy, metallic thud shook the Mercedes.

A black Dodge Charger had pulled directly across his rear bumper, blocking his exit. Through his front windshield, a second unmarked vehicle slid diagonally across the driveway, cutting off the street.

Marcus froze. His breath hitched in his chest. "No, no, no..."

Four men in navy windbreakers bearing the bold yellow letters *STATE POLICE - SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS* stepped out of the vehicles. Their hands rested near their sidearms as they approached the Mercedes from both sides.

The driver’s side door was yanked open. A tall, silver-haired man in a dark trench coat leaned down, flashing an official warrant signed by a Federal District Magistrate.

"Marcus Hayes?" Harlan Vance asked, his voice cutting through the hum of the air conditioner.

"I... I am an attorney," Marcus stammered, pulling his briefcase tightly against his chest. "I have client privilege. You cannot search this vehicle without—"

"Step out of the car, Mr. Hayes," Vance interrupted, not raising his voice. "We have a federal warrant for your arrest under Title 18, Section 1341 for wire fraud, and an indictment from the state grand jury for grand larceny, environmental contamination, and conspiracy to commit second-degree murder."

The word *murder* fell like a guillotine.

Marcus’s face turned an ashen, translucent gray. The leather briefcase slipped from his numb fingers, spilling the red-stamped foreclosure notices onto the floor mats.

"I didn't... I didn't mix the chemicals," Marcus blurted out, his voice cracking into a high-pitched sob as an officer pulled him from the leather seat and forced his arms behind his back. The cold steel of the handcuffs snapped tight around his wrists. "It was her! It was Eleanor! She brought the drums from her uncle's orchard! She told me it was just weed killer to ruin the crop so her mother would sell the land! I didn't know Clara was in the greenhouse!"

Harlan Vance picked up the briefcase, pulled out Marcus's cell phone, and slipped it into an evidence pouch.

"You're going to tell the grand jury all about it, Mr. Hayes," Vance said calmly. "Starting with the five hundred thousand dollars you funneled through the Sterling development account. But first, you have a wedding reception to attend."

Marcus blinked through his tears, confused and terrified. "What?"

May you like

Vance reached out, straightened Marcus’s crooked silk tie, and patted his shoulder with clinical precision. "Miss Miller requested that you and Eleanor maintain your reservations for the first dance. It would be terribly impolite to leave your wife alone on the dance floor."
