Chapter 8 - The Threshold of Justice

At four-fifteen that afternoon, Courtroom 4B was reconvened for an emergency hearing.
The reporters were still there, sensing blood in the water. Belle sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing her pearls, her chin held high, entirely unaware of what had transpired in the basement deposition room. She believed that her mother’s testimony was carrying the day. She believed that I was about to be bound over for trial.
Eleanor sat two seats away from Belle.
She did not touch her younger daughter. She did not look at her. Eleanor was staring at the seal of the State of Florida mounted on the wall above the judge’s bench as though she were reading her own tombstone.
Judge Abernathy entered, his robes billowing around him.
"Case number 23-CF-4892, State of Florida versus Laurel Holloway," the clerk called out.
Karen Cross rose from the prosecution table.
"Your Honor," Cross said, her voice clear and carrying through the silent courtroom. "The State moves to dismiss all charges against the defendant, Laurel Holloway, with prejudice."
A sharp, audible gasp tore through the gallery.
Belle bolted upright in her seat. "What? No! What are you doing?"
"Silence in the gallery!" the bailiff barked.
Judge Abernathy looked down at the prosecutor. "State moves to dismiss with prejudice? On what grounds, Ms. Cross?"
"Newly discovered, definitive physical and acoustic evidence has demonstrated that the complaining witness, Annabelle Holloway, fabricated the allegations, and that the physical altercation was initiated entirely by Annabelle Holloway," Cross stated plainly. "Furthermore, the State has determined that the witness Eleanor Holloway provided false testimony to law enforcement officers on October twelfth."
Belle’s face transformed. The delicate, weeping child vanished entirely, replaced by a snarling, panicked fury.
"Mom!" Belle screamed, grabbing Eleanor’s arm. "Mom, tell them! Tell them she attacked me! Tell them!"
Eleanor did not turn her head. She pulled her arm away from Belle’s grip with a slow, deliberate revulsion that seemed to freeze the air in the room.
"I can't, Belle," Eleanor whispered.
Her whisper was picked up by the court reporter’s microphone.
"The tape," Eleanor said, tears finally spilling down her hollow cheeks. "They have the recording."
Belle froze.
She looked from Eleanor to the defense table—to where Isaac Vance was standing with a stack of signed arrest warrants in his hands.
And then, Belle looked at me.
There was no smirk now. There was no whispered threat in the corridor. There was only the raw, naked terror of a predator that had stepped directly into the iron teeth of its own snare.

Two plainclothes detectives from the Major Crimes Division stepped through the double doors at the rear of the courtroom.
