Chapter 7 - THE UNRAVELING OF THE EMPIRE

The fallout within the Vance family occurred with the destructive speed of a controlled demolition.

By Monday morning, the manila folder Maya had dropped on the mahogany table had generated more shockwaves than an earthquake. Uncle Robert, who prided himself on being the family's self-appointed moral compass, called Maya in a state of absolute indignation—not at Maya, but at Linda and Nicole.

"I had no idea they forged your signature, Maya," Robert stammered over the phone. "Your mother called me crying, saying it was just a 'family misunderstanding,' but forgery? Commercial fraud? Good lord, Nicole could have police officers showing up at her apartment if The Crystal Pavilion decides to press charges!"

"That's between Nicole, my attorney, and the venue's legal department," Maya replied calmly, reviewing a set of structural schematics on her desk. "I’m simply recovering my five thousand dollars and securing a formal, written retraction of every lie they spread across the family network."

"And your mother... well, she’s beside herself," Robert continued. "She’s demanding you drop this immediately to 'preserve family unity.'"

"Family unity was shattered the moment my daughter was told her ninth birthday didn't matter because her aunt was more important," Maya said coldly. "Tell Mom that her copy of the legal demand letter is arriving by courier at noon today."

True to her word, the formal legal demand letter hit Linda’s doorstep precisely at 12:15 PM. Drafted by Maya’s corporate attorney, the document outlined two distinct paths forward:

Option A: Nicole and Linda would sign a comprehensive, notarized confession and public retraction acknowledging that they forged Maya’s signature, hijacked the venue without her knowledge, and slandered her character across the family network, while reimbursing Maya every single cent of the five thousand dollars plus legal fees within forty-eight hours.

Option B: The Crystal Pavilion would formally file criminal charges for fraud and forgery against Nicole and Linda, and Maya would initiate a civil lawsuit for emotional distress and intentional misrepresentation.

By Monday evening, Option A was chosen with breathless haste.

Nicole called Maya three times, her voice reduced to a hysterical, tear-soaked whine, begging for forgiveness, claiming that Evan was threatening to call off the wedding if her criminal stupidity ruined his social standing. Maya let every single call go straight to voicemail.

On Tuesday morning, an envelope arrived by courier containing a cashier's check for $5,200, alongside a two-page, notarized confession signed by both Linda and Nicole. The confession admitted in explicit, humiliating detail that they had fabricated the event schedule, lied to the venue management, and subsequently lied to the entire family about Maya's involvement in order to cover up their own financial negligence.

Maya walked the confession straight to the Vance Family Circle group chat, hit upload, and attached a single caption:

“For anyone wondering who planned the dual celebration yesterday. Here is the official confession, signed and notarized. Never lie about my daughter again.”

Within five minutes, the group chat fell into a profound, suffocating silence. Not a single person replied. The digital room was as dead as the Crystal Pavilion dance floor after Maya walked out.
