Chapter 7 - CPS Knocks on the Grand Estate

While Kenneth and Diane attempted to wage an amateur psychological war against Emily, the real catastrophe was unfolding in their own living room.

Bentley Vance was eight years old, and he had never heard the word "no" in his entire life.

Deprived of his mother, Bentley had transformed into a feral whirlwind of destruction. He had smashed a sixty-inch television with a golf club because Diane wouldn't let him order fifty dollars’ worth of video game currency on her iPad. He had kicked his grandfather in the shins, spat on the housekeeper, and spent forty-eight hours screaming obscenities at the top of his lungs.

"Bentley, stop it! Stop it this instant!" Diane screamed, clutching her head as the boy hurled a porcelain figurine against the marble hearth, shattering it into a hundred pieces. "That was an authentic Meissen figurine!"

"I don't care, you old hag!" Bentley shrieked, kicking the coffee table. "Mommy lets me do whatever I want! I want my iPad! Give me the gold coin! She promised me I could have Sadie’s coin!"

Before Diane could grab him, the heavy brass door-knocker sounded three sharp, authoritative raps.

Kenneth trudged to the door, his eyes bloodshot, expecting another process server or an aggressive journalist.

Standing on the limestone porch was a tall, stern-faced woman carrying a black clipboard, accompanied by two armed officers from the county sheriff's department.

"Kenneth Vance?" the woman asked, displaying an official state identification badge. "I am Margaret Thorne, Senior Case Investigator with County Child Protective Services. This is a court-ordered emergency welfare intervention regarding minor Bentley Vance."

Kenneth blustered, attempting to straighten his rumpled collar. "This is private property! We are Bentley’s legal grandparents and temporary guardians! You have no right—"

"I have a signed warrant from the Family Court, Mr. Vance," Investigator Thorne interrupted, stepping cleanly past him into the foyer without waiting for an invitation. "A formal child endangerment report was filed following the aggravated assault incident on Sunday. A home environment evaluation is mandatory when a custodial parent is remanded into felony detention."

Thorne stopped dead in her tracks as she surveyed the living room.

The space was in utter chaos. Shattered porcelain littered the marble floor. An empty gin bottle sat on the antique sideboard. Bentley was rolling on the Persian rug, screaming profanities, his shirt covered in chocolate stains and his face bright red with hysterical fury.

Diane was trembling by the couch, smelling heavily of alcohol, looking completely unhinged.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Bentley screamed, spotting the CPS worker. "Get out of my house! My dad is the boss of this house!"

Investigator Thorne did not flinch. She observed Bentley’s explosive, unregulated behavior, took down four lines of rapid notes on her legal pad, and then turned her piercing gaze onto Diane.

"Mrs. Vance, have you consumed alcohol today?" Thorne asked with clinical precision.

"That is none of your business!" Diane cried out, swaying slightly. "I am under severe emotional distress! My daughter was unlawfully kidnapped by the state! We are wealthy, respectable citizens! Look at this home!"

"I am looking at this home," Thorne replied coolly. "I see an unsecured shattered ceramic hazard within reach of an eight-year-old. I see alcohol containers accessible to a minor. I see zero structured supervision. And according to Bentley’s school records obtained this morning, he has eleven unexcused absences this semester and has been involved in three separate physical assaults against classmates."

Kenneth stepped forward, his fists clenched. "Courtney handles his schooling! We are merely providing temporary shelter while her legal team clears her name!"

"Courtney Vance is in a maximum-security detention cell facing eight to twelve years in prison," Thorne said flatly. "And based on the acute instability, substance influence, and behavioral volatility observed in this household, I am determining that this environment poses an immediate risk to the minor child’s physical and psychological welfare."

"What?!" Diane shrieked, her voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "You cannot take our grandson! You can't!"

Thorne signaled to the two sheriff’s deputies standing at the door. "Deputies, please secure the minor. Bentley Vance is being placed into emergency state protective custody pending a formal dependency hearing."

"Don't touch me! You're poor! You're filthy!" Bentley screamed, thrashing wildly as a deputy gently but firmly lifted him by the arms, carrying him out toward the waiting county vehicle.

"Bentley! My baby!" Diane wailed, falling to her knees onto the broken shards of her precious porcelain, oblivious to the sharp edges slicing through her expensive stockings.

Kenneth stood paralyzed, his mouth hanging open, watching the state transport drive away down the tree-lined driveway.

The Vance legacy was not just cracking.

It was completely dissolving into the dirt.
