Chapter 6 - The Return

The heavy oak doors of the Grand Ballroom didn't swing open quietly this time.

The security director pushed them wide with a firm, deliberate shove, and the three of us walked into the room like a tactical unit entering a breach.

Inside, the atmosphere was at its absolute peak. The lighting had dimmed to a warm, celebratory amber. In the center of the stage, framed by cascading floral arrangements and glowing banners, the award committee chair was speaking into a wireless microphone, praising Fallon’s unmatched leadership, her moral compass, and her revolutionary contributions to the tech sector.

Fallon stood at the center of the stage, radiant in her architectural black gown, holding a heavy crystal trophy that caught the spotlight and splintered it into a thousand glittering shards. She was smiling—that breathtaking, flawless smile that had graced the covers of three national magazines that month.

Then she looked toward the entrance.

Her smile didn't just falter; it shattered.

Her eyes locked onto me—standing upright, my lip split, my eye bruised, my dress torn at the knee—and then they tracked to my left, landing on the uniformed police officer and the hotel security director walking resolutely down the central aisle.

My mother saw us next.

She was standing near the front row, champagne flute poised near her lips. As her eyes registered the police officer and my battered face, her hand froze mid-air. The champagne flute tilted, a golden splash spilling over the rim and staining the front of her expensive emerald silk pantsuit.

The music didn't stop immediately, but the murmur of the crowd died away in progressive waves as people turned to see what was interrupting the celebration.

The committee chair blinked, trailing off mid-sentence as the security director marched right up the steps of the stage, bypassed the podium, and stopped directly in front of Fallon Blake.

The room went dead, suffocatingly silent. You could hear the hum of the overhead projector and the faint clink of ice in a glass three rows back.

The security director didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. He simply placed his corporate tablet flat upon the mahogany podium, right beside Fallon’s sparkling crystal trophy, and pressed play.
