Chapter 15 - The Unwelcome Visitor

A heavy, persistent knock echoed through the quiet apartment hallway late one Tuesday afternoon, shattering the serene routine the mother and daughter had carefully constructed. Opening the door, the mother was met not by a friendly relative or a parcel delivery courier, but by Lenny. He looked profoundly uncomfortable in a rumpled designer suit that contrasted sharply with the humble, unpretentious neighborhood. His usual arrogant swagger was completely replaced by a defensive, twitchy posture, shifting his weight nervously from one foot to the other as he attempted to step uninvited into the entryway.
"We need to talk," Lenny murmured, glancing anxiously down the empty hallway before turning his gaze toward the living room where the ten-year-old sat quietly drawing at her desk. He spoke in a rushed, hushed tone, attempting to frame his visit as an urgent mediation session in the interest of "family peace." He complained bitterly about the relentless online harassment, the sudden termination of business contracts, and the humiliating social ostracization that had made their daily lives completely unbearable.
He had not come to offer an apology or express remorse; he had come to demand a concession—a public statement from the sister absolving them of malice, as if a few carefully chosen words could magically erase the damage of their callousness.
