Chapter 9 - The Siege of the Estate

Before Marcus could answer, before I could scream or hit the wall-mounted alarm, the heavy glass window at the end of the hallway exploded inward in a cascade of glittering shards.

Crash!

"Ambush! Front and rear perimeter breached!" David’s voice crackled frantically over the tactical radio clipped to Marcus’s vest.

Instantly, the quiet, luxurious mansion transformed into a war zone. Alarms began to shriek through the ceiling vents—a deafening, strobe-lit wail of red emergency lights flashing across the marble walls.

Marcus moved with terrifying, blinding speed. In one fluid motion, he holstered his weapon, grabbed Julian Vance by the lapels of his expensive overcoat, and slammed him hard against the oak-paneled wall, pressing the barrel of his SIG Sauer directly beneath the man's chin.

"Call off your men!" Marcus roared over the wailing sirens.

Julian Vance didn't even blink. He let out a dry, chilling chuckle, blood trickling from a small cut on his cheek where the flying glass had grazed him.

"My men aren't here to negotiate, my boy," Vance choked out, smiling through the pain. "They're here to sanitize."

Heavy footsteps pounded across the lawn outside. Automatic gunfire stuttered in the night air—short, suppressed bursts of tactical rounds chewing through the exterior siding of the house. Glass shattered in the West Wing. Shouts echoed from the courtyard.

"Mrs. Miller! Grab the girl!" Marcus shouted, his eyes locked on Vance while his tactical radio blared with chaotic status reports from the outer guards. "We have to move, now!"

I didn't hesitate. I turned and bolted up the grand staircase, my feet flying over the plush carpet as adrenaline surged through every vein in my body.

"Lily!" I screamed, tearing down the second-floor hallway. "Lily, honey, where are you?"

The door to her bedroom swung open, and Lily poked her head out, her eyes wide with terror as she clutched her stuffed rabbit.

"Mommy? What's that noise?"

"Come here! Right now!" I lunged forward, scooping her up into my arms in a fierce, protective embrace, burying her face against my shoulder so she couldn't see the flashing red strobe lights painting the hallway in crimson.

As I turned to run back toward the reinforced stairwell, a dark figure stepped out from the shadows of the linen closet at the end of the hall.

A man in a tactical charcoal uniform, his face obscured by a Kevlar mask, raised a suppressed submachine gun directly toward us.

My heart stopped. There was nowhere to run. No cover.

Bang.

A single, deafening gunshot echoed from behind me.

David appeared at the top of the stairs, smoke curling from the barrel of his rifle as the Vanguard operative dropped silently to the carpet, lifeless.

"Mrs. Miller! This way! The panic shelter in the master suite!" David shouted, waving us forward.

I clutched Lily tighter, my legs trembling, and sprinted into the master bedroom. David slammed the heavy steel-reinforced security door behind us, spinning the heavy mechanical locking wheel until it engaged with a deep, echoing thunk.

Inside the panic room, it was pitch black for a fraction of a second before emergency battery-powered LED strips illuminated the reinforced concrete walls, a bank of security monitors, and an encrypted satellite phone wired directly to Vincent Moretti’s private command center.

I set Lily down on a cot, wrapping my arms around her trembling body.

"You're safe, baby. Mommy's right here. Close your eyes and don't look," I whispered, tears streaming hot down my cheeks.

On the wall-mounted monitors, the camera feeds showed the brutal reality of the attack. Half a dozen tactical operatives in unmarked gear were methodically clearing the ground floor of the mansion. Marcus and David were fighting a desperate rear-guard action near the kitchen, exchanging gunfire with the intruders.

And standing calmly in the middle of the foyer amidst the smoke and shattered glass was Julian Vance, dusting off his overcoat as though he were waiting for a taxi.

I reached out with a shaking hand, grabbed the satellite phone off its cradle, and smashed the speed-dial button programmed for Vincent Moretti’s private line.

It rang once. Twice.

Pick up. Please, God, pick up.

"Moretti," a voice rumbled through the speaker—cold, calm, and utterly lethal.

"Mr. Moretti! It's Sarah Miller! They're here! Julian Vance’s men are attacking the estate—they bypassed the gates, they're inside!" I screamed into the receiver, my voice breaking.

May you like

There was a microsecond of absolute silence on the line. Then, the ambient sound of roaring helicopter engines and shouting men came through the speaker.

"Lock the panic room. Do not open it for anyone," Moretti commanded, his voice dropping into a register that sent a shiver down my spine. "I am four minutes away."
