Chapter 3 - The Paper Kingdom Falls

The atmosphere in the grand foyer dropped below freezing.
“Evelyn?” Derek choked out, his voice cracking beneath the polished veneer. “What is this? You’re on retainer with my venture firm. You can’t represent her! This is an egregious conflict of interest!”
“Your firm paid a consultation retainer for corporate asset structuring, Derek,” Evelyn replied, her heels clicking crisply against the marble as she moved toward me. She didn't spare him a second glance. She gently laid a warm hand on my shoulder, looking down at Oliver, who had finally quieted to muffled, exhausted hiccups. “Corporate contracts do not bar me from representing an abused spouse in a felony domestic assault and fraudulent custody conspiracy.”
“Assault?” Vanessa shrieked, stumbling out from behind the kitchen archway, her mask of victimhood completely shattering. “I didn’t assault anyone! She attacked me! She’s crazy!”
Sergeant Miller’s partner immediately stepped in front of Vanessa, his hand resting firmly on his duty belt. “Ma’am, stand back. Keep your hands where we can see them.”
“Sergeant,” Evelyn said calmly, opening her briefcase and retrieving a tablet computer. “Ten minutes ago, an independent, encrypted cloud server received a direct live-feed transfer from this residence. Mr. Vance believed he had isolated the home’s local network. What he failed to realize is that the property’s architectural blueprints—deeded solely in Clara’s late father’s name—included a closed-circuit secondary recording unit inside the ceiling crown moldings.”
Derek’s head snapped toward the ceiling. His eyes darted frantically across the carved plaster rosettes lining the perimeter of the foyer.
“The footage has already been backed up to off-site legal storage,” Evelyn continued, tapping the tablet’s screen and turning it toward Sergeant Miller.
The high-definition video played with crystal clarity. The audio was unmistakable.
There was Derek, standing with his hands in his pockets, watching impassively. There was Vanessa, her face contorted in vicious rage, lunging across the console table, grabbing my throat, and attempting to pry a nine-month-old infant out of my arms while screaming obscenities. And there was Derek’s cold, chilling voice resonating through the room: *“That can be corrected... You shouldn’t have been digging.”*
Sergeant Miller’s expression hardened into granite. He turned slowly toward Vanessa. “Turn around and put your hands behind your back.”
“What? No! Derek, do something!” Vanessa screamed, backing away toward the dining table. “Derek! You promised me she’d be in a psych ward by tonight! You promised me we’d have the house!”
“Vanessa, shut your mouth!” Derek roared, his composure fracturing entirely.
“Hands behind your back, now!” the second officer commanded, grabbing Vanessa’s arm and pinning her against the wall. The sound of metal handcuffs ratcheting shut echoed like a gunshot through the house. Vanessa sobbed, spewing curses and threats as she was marched out the front door, her heels dragging against the stone steps.
Derek stood frozen, his chest heaving, his eyes wild. He looked at Sergeant Miller, then at Evelyn, and finally down at me.
“Clara,” he said, his voice dropping into a desperate, pleading whisper. He took a step toward me, dropping to one knee on the floor. “Clara, listen to me. She lost her mind. You saw it. I froze—I was in shock! I was trying to de-escalate her so she wouldn’t hurt you or Oliver. You know how volatile she is. Everything I did, every paper I drafted, was just to have leverage to keep her away from us!”
It was staggering. Even now, with video evidence staring him in the face, the machinery of his deception kept turning. He genuinely believed he could rewrite reality if he just spoke softly enough.
“Where are the papers, Derek?” I asked. My voice didn't shake. The terror that had gripped my throat for months had evaporated, replaced by a cold, crystalline stillness.
Derek swallowed hard. “What papers, honey?”
I looked at Sergeant Miller. “Under the bottom shelf of the console table. He hid them when you rang the bell.”
Sergeant Miller walked over, knelt down, and pulled out the thick stack of legal documents Derek had shoved into the darkness. Miller flipped through the first few pages, his eyebrows climbing higher with every second.
“Emergency ex-parte custody petition,” Miller read aloud. “Falsified medical affidavits citing severe hallucinations and suicidal ideation... signed by a Dr. Aris Thorne.” Miller looked up at Derek. “Isn’t Dr. Thorne currently under federal indictment for prescription fraud?”
Derek’s lips parted, but no sound came out.
“Dr. Thorne was stripped of his medical license three days ago,” Evelyn stated smoothly. “And three hours ago, he signed a sworn confession detailing how Derek Vance paid him fifty thousand dollars to manufacture a false psychiatric profile of Clara Vance to strip her of parental rights.”
Derek stumbled back against the wall, his breathing ragged, his pristine façade crumbling into ash.
“Derek Vance,” Sergeant Miller said, drawing his own pair of handcuffs. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit custodial interference, filing false police and court reports, and child endangerment.”
“You can’t do this!” Derek yelled, thrashing as Miller wrenched his arms behind his back. “Do you know who my investors are? Do you know who I am? Clara, tell them! Tell them you’re crazy! If you let them take me, you won’t see a single cent! I will bury you in litigation until you starve on the street!”
The click of the cuffs was the sweetest sound I had ever heard.
As the officers hauled Derek out through the double doors, he kept screaming my name, his voice growing fainter until the heavy door clicked shut, leaving the foyer in utter, ringing silence.
Evelyn turned to me, kneeling down on the parquet floor. She took my free hand in hers. “It’s over, Clara. The first wall has fallen.”
“This was only the first wall, wasn’t it?” I murmured, resting my cheek against Oliver’s soft hair.
May you like
“Yes,” Evelyn said darkly. “Because tomorrow morning, we open Derek’s offshore accounts. And that’s where the real monsters are hiding.”
