Chapter 5 - The Summoning to the Office

Back at Bennett & Sons corporate headquarters, my father, Robert Bennett, was sitting behind his enormous mahogany desk when the heavy oak doors banged open without a knock.

His chief financial officer, a nervous middle-aged man named Thomas, rushed into the office, his face pale and slick with sweat.

“Robert, we have a catastrophic emergency,” Thomas stammered, gasping for breath.

Robert scowled, not even looking up from his blueprints. “Calm down, Thomas. What is it now? Did another supplier complain about payment?”

“Worse!” Thomas shouted, slamming a stack of printed legal notices onto the desk. “Every single corporate account has been frozen by federal banking authorities. The payroll accounts are locked. The operating lines of credit have been revoked. And a court-appointed forensic receiver has just locked down the server room downstairs!”

Robert froze. The color drained entirely from his rudely arrogant face. He slowly looked up from his desk, his eyes wide with sudden, suffocating panic.

“Frozen? By who? On whose authority?”

Thomas swallowed hard. “The legal filings list Rachel Morgan... acting on behalf of Emily Bennett.”

The name hit Robert like a physical blow to the chest.

Emily.

His disowned daughter. The quiet, reliable ATM he had thrown out of the house less than twelve hours ago.

“That's impossible,” Robert whispered, his voice cracking. “Emily doesn't have the power to freeze corporate accounts. She's just an employee—she's my daughter!”

“She’s not just your daughter, Robert,” a calm, icy voice echoed from the doorway.

Robert snapped his head toward the entrance. Standing in the doorway was Rachel Morgan, flanked by two armed federal marshals and a court stenographer. Behind Rachel stepped me, dressed in a sharp charcoal business suit, my expression completely devoid of emotion. I looked at my father the way a scientist looks at a specimen under a microscope.

“Emily...” Robert breathed, standing up so fast his leather chair tipped over backward and crashed onto the floor. “What... what is the meaning of this? Have you lost your absolute mind? Call off these people right now! I am your father!”

I walked slowly into the office, stopping a few feet away from his mahogany desk. I didn't flinch. I didn't raise my voice. I simply looked him straight in the eyes.

“You made your position very clear last night, Dad,” I said smoothly, my voice cutting through the silent office. “You told me I was no daughter of yours. You threw my suitcase down the stairs. And you demanded my credit card so your family could continue living a life of luxury built on my back.”

Robert's face flushed a deep, mottled crimson, veins bulging at his temples.

“You ungrateful little witch!” he roared, lunging forward across the desk as if he wanted to strike me.

The two federal marshals instantly stepped forward, pinning his arms behind his back and forcing him down against the desk with practiced efficiency.

“Do not touch her,” one marshal warned coldly.

Robert struggled against their grip, panting with rage, glaring at me with unadulterated hatred. “You'll pay for this, Emily! I will ruin you! I'll disown you a thousand times over! You're nothing without this family!”

I smiled slightly—a calm, pitying smile that cut him deeper than any insult ever could.

“Dad, you still don't understand, do you?” I said softly, stepping closer. “I was never nothing without this family. This family was entirely nothing without me.”

I turned to Rachel, nodding. “Proceed with the formal criminal referral and asset seizure for Uncle Arthur and Eleanor as well.”

As the marshals escorted my sputtering, defeated father out of his own corporate headquarters in handcuffs, I turned and walked out toward the private elevator. The architecture of deceit my family had spent seven years building had finally collapsed into dust.
