Chapter 4 - The Iron Door

The sound of the pounding on the front door acted like a bucket of ice water thrown over the entire apartment. For three endless seconds, nobody moved.
Julian’s hand remained frozen in mid-air, his fist clenched inches away from Clara’s face, his eyes wide with a sudden, panicked realization that his carefully controlled domestic fortress had just been violently breached by the outside world. His grip on Clara’s hair slackened, allowing her to collapse back against the carpet, gasping for air while she clutched Leo tightly to her chest.
"Police!" the voice shouted again from the hallway, even louder and more insistent this time, accompanied by the heavy rattling of the doorknob. "Open the door immediately! We have an active emergency call from this location! Open up or we will breach!"
Martha appeared in the hallway, her face draining of its customary arrogant color. All the chilling composure she had worn like armor just moments ago vanished into thin air, replaced by sudden, frantic panic. She hurried toward the living room, her housecoat fluttering behind her.
"Julian!" Martha hissed, her voice sharp and trembling as she grabbed her son’s arm. "Julian, what is happening? Who called them? What did you do?"
"She did!" Julian snarled, pointing a shaking finger down at Clara, who was curled on the floor of the nursery. "She called them! That ungrateful bitch left the line open!"
"Open the door! Last warning! Police department!"
The sound of heavy tactical boots shifting against the doormat outside made it clear they weren't going to wait much longer. A second voice joined the first—crisp, authoritative, and giving rapid-fire instructions.
Julian scrambled backward away from the nursery, looking frantically around the living room as if searching for a magical escape hatch that didn't exist. "Don't open it! Don't answer it!" he whispered frantically to his mother. "If they come in, they'll see—they'll see everything."
"You have to open it, Julian!" Martha argued, her voice rising in panic. "If you don't open it, they'll break the door down, and that looks even worse! Open it and act normal! Tell them it was a domestic misunderstanding! Tell them she's hysterical!"
Before Julian could make a move toward the lock, a deafening CRACK echoed through the apartment.
The police didn't wait any longer. Using a heavy battering ram, the officers smashed through the deadbolt of the flimsy apartment door with a single, practiced blow. The wooden frame splintered, the lock housing sheared off completely, and the heavy front door swung violently inward, crashing against the interior wall with a thunderous bang.
"POLICE! STAY WHERE YOU ARE! DON'T MOVE!"
At least three uniformed police officers, wearing tactical vests and carrying equipment belts, swarmed into the small living room like a tide of authority. Their heavy boots thudded against the laminate flooring as they secured the perimeter in seconds.
"Living room clear!" the lead officer barked, his eyes scanning the space before fixing instantly on Julian and Martha, who stood frozen near the kitchen archway. "Keep your hands where we can see them! Do not move a muscle!"
Julian threw his hands up awkwardly, his face pale, forcing a sickly, nervous smile onto his lips as he tried to mask his terror with false confidence. "Officer—officer, there's been a mistake. It's just a family argument. My wife, she's... she's postpartum, she's having a mental breakdown, she called you guys over nothing—"
"Shut your mouth and step back against the wall! Hands on the wall, now!" the officer commanded, his tone leaving zero room for argument. Two other officers stepped forward, forcefully pressing Julian against the wallpaper and patting him down with practiced efficiency, slapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a sharp click.
"Hey! What are you doing? You can't do this!" Julian protested, his voice cracking as the cold metal bit into his skin. "This is my home! I pay the rent! She's lying!"
"Sir, we received an open-line 911 call from this residence featuring sounds of physical assault, a choking infant, and explicit threats," the lead officer said coldly, ignoring Julian’s protests entirely. "You're being detained for domestic assault and child endangerment. Turn around."
While Julian was being hauled backward toward the shattered front door, another officer, a female sergeant with a stern, compassionate expression, swept past them and headed directly down the narrow hallway toward the nursery.
"Clear the back," she murmured into her shoulder radio. Then, she stepped into the nursery doorway.
Her eyes swept the room—the scattered diaper bag, the glowing smartphone on the floor, and finally, Clara, huddled in the corner with a bruised, bloodied face, desperately shielding a crying newborn against her chest.
The sergeant's professional facade softened instantly. She dropped to one knee, lowering her voice to a gentle, steady whisper so as not to startle them further.
"Ma'am?" the officer asked softly, holding up her hands slowly to show she meant no harm. "My name is Sergeant Miller. Are you alright? Can I see the baby?"
Clara looked up through swollen, tear-filled eyes. For the first time all night, the crushing weight on her chest felt fractionally lighter. The iron door was broken. The monsters were being restrained.
"He... he tried to hurt my baby," Clara whispered, her voice cracking as fresh tears spilled over her swollen cheekbones. "He turned him blue. He wouldn't let him breathe."
Sergeant Miller’s expression hardened into cold fury as she glanced at Clara’s split lip, bruised face, and trembling arms. She keyed her radio immediately.

"Medic, we need an ambulance at the location immediately. Confirmed infant distress and severe maternal trauma. Suspects secured."
She turned back to Clara, reaching out a steady, protective hand. "You're safe now, honey. It's over. Let me take the little one, and we're going to get you both to the hospital right this second."
