Chapter 8 - The First Spring

Six months later, April painted the suburban landscape in brilliant shades of emerald green and soft pink cherry blossoms.
Clara stood on the front porch of a charming, sunlit craftsman cottage two towns over from her old nightmare. The moving boxes were completely unpacked, the walls were painted in warm, cheerful yellows and soft blues, and the air smelled of freshly cut grass and spring rain rather than fear and bleach.
In her arms, Leo laughed—a bright, bubbling, infectious sound that echoed across the quiet neighborhood. He was nearly ten months old now, crawling everywhere, pulling himself up against furniture with chubby, determined hands, and flashing a wide, toothless grin whenever his mother walked into the room. The red welt marks on his chest had long since faded away, leaving behind smooth, unblemished skin that held no memory of the darkness that had tried to claim him.
Clara looked down at her son, her heart swelling with an emotion so fierce and complete it brought happy tears to her eyes.
She had filed for divorce immediately following the verdict, securing full, uncontested legal and physical custody of Leo, along with the complete liquidation of Julian’s frozen assets to establish a permanent trust fund for her son's future. The past was a closed chapter, locked away behind bars where it belonged.
A gentle breeze rustled the wind chimes hanging from the porch ceiling, creating a soft, melodic tune that danced on the afternoon air.

"Come on, my sweet boy," Clara whispered, pressing a soft kiss to Leo’s fragrant curls as she bounced him gently on her hip. "Let's go plant some flowers in the garden. Our garden."
Leo squealed with delight, patting her cheek with his small, warm hand as they stepped down off the porch together, walking straight into a future that belonged entirely to them.
