Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of the Estate
The final collapse came swiftly, unceremoniously, and with absolute finality.
Two weeks after my departure, I received a certified legal letter forwarded from my old address—though it had been opened and resealed by my mother before being dropped off at my new apartment building's mail slot by a reluctant cousin.
It wasn't from a lawyer representing me. It was from the municipal tax assessment office, addressed to my parents.
SECOND NOTICE OF INTENT TO FORECLOSE - TAX LIEN SALE.
Because the property taxes for the current quarter had gone unpaid, and because the previous year's payment arrangements—which I had partially subsidized—had lapsed into default, the county was moving forward with a tax lien foreclosure auction scheduled for early December.
Without my income injections, without my savings to bail them out, and with Derek draining whatever limited pension funds my parents had left to pay for his mounting personal debts, the house was slipping right out from under them.
According to a final, desperate voicemail left on my blocked call log by Aunt Linda—who had somehow bypassed my block using her husband's phone—the household had completely imploded.
Derek and Mom had gotten into a screaming match in the kitchen that resulted in a shattered window and Derek packing up his kids and storming out to stay with a friend, furious that the house his parents promised him was actually riddled with debt.
Mom and Dad were left alone in a half-empty house, facing the very real possibility of losing the roof over their heads before winter.
They had tried to call me a parasite. They had tried to discard me when I was no longer convenient.

And in the end, they discovered the terrifying truth of what happens when the person holding up the sky simply steps away and lets gravity do its work.
I didn't gloat. I didn't drive over to watch the wreckage. I simply filed the tax notice into a folder in my desk drawer, closed it, and went back to living my life.
