Chapter 8 - The Legal Reckoning

The hammer of the law does not fall with anger; it falls with the heavy, methodical weight of stone.

In March, inside Courtroom 4B of the Federal District Court, Richard Vance and Claire Vance stood before Federal Magistrate Judge Harold Vance (no relation).

Both siblings were dressed in off-the-rack suits purchased from discount retailers. Their expensive defense attorneys had long since withdrawn due to non-payment; they were now represented by court-appointed public defenders who looked visibly exhausted by their clients' endless excuses.

Across the aisle, representing Vance Global and the non-profit foundation, was a team of four elite corporate litigators who did not utter a single wasted word.

Judge Harold Vance flipped through the audit report, his heavy brows drawn into a sharp, unforgiving line.

"Mr. Richard Vance," the judge began, his voice echoing in the wood-paneled courtroom. "The forensic accounting team has presented indisputable evidence that you systematically falsified vendor contracts and embezzled one million, one hundred and forty thousand dollars over a five-year period from an educational foundation."

Richard gripped the defense podium, his knuckles white. "Your Honor... it was a family dispute! My brother has hundreds of millions! He never intended for those contracts to be scrutinized like this! It was understood within the family that—"

"This is not a family dinner table, Mr. Vance," the judge cut him off sharply. "This is a court of law. Non-profit entities are governed by federal statutes, not sibling understandings. Did you, or did you not, submit invoices for outreach seminars that occurred while you were on vacation in Aspen?"

Richard opened his mouth. He looked over at Claire, hoping for support.

Claire immediately leaned into her public defender’s microphone. "Your Honor! My brother Richard handled all the paperwork! I only received design fees! I had no idea the foundation was being mismanaged! It was all Richard and our mother!"

Richard’s head whipped around, his eyes wild with betrayal. "Claire, you liar! You begged Mom for that forty thousand dollars for your Italian wardrobe! You knew every single detail!"

"Silence!" Judge Harold Vance slammed his gavel down with a concussive crack that silenced both siblings instantly. "Both of you will cease this shameful display immediately."

The judge adjusted his spectacles and looked down from the bench with cold disdain.

"The court finds that both defendants acted with willful, calculated malice to defraud a public-benefit organization. Under the negotiated civil settlement terms submitted by Vance Global Holdings, the plaintiff has agreed to waive immediate criminal sentencing on one condition."

Richard exhaled a desperate, ragged breath. "Anything, Your Honor. Anything."

"The terms are total restitution and asset liquidation," the judge read from the order. "All personal real estate, luxury vehicles, personal jewelry collections, and investment accounts owned by Richard Vance and Claire Vance are hereby transferred into the Noah Vance Educational Trust. Furthermore, both defendants will be subject to a seventy-five percent wage garnishment on all future earnings until the balance of one million, eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars is repaid in full."

Claire gasped, clutching her chest. "Seventy-five percent?! How are we supposed to live?! How do we pay rent?!"

"By working an honest job, Ms. Vance," the judge said without a shred of pity. "Court is adjourned."

The gavel slammed down.

As the marshals escorted them out of the courtroom, Richard and Claire glared at each other with pure, unadulterated venom. The fake harmony that Evelyn had tried to buy with Jason's money was completely obliterated. In the hallway, they screamed accusations at each other, their voices echoing down the marble corridors until security guards physically separated them, forcing them into separate elevators down toward the street.
