Chapter 7 - Public Ruin

In the digital age, humiliation doesn't fade into yesterday’s newspapers; it lives forever in forty-second vertical video clips, amplified by algorithmic outrage.

It started at seven P.M. on a Friday.

Paige Miller—the actress Nora had hired to play "Charlotte DuPont"—sat in front of a ring light in her Los Angeles apartment, wearing a simple gray sweatshirt, sipping iced matcha from a mason jar.

The video was titled: *"Storytime: How I got paid $50k to expose the ultimate gold-digging husband."*

Within two hours, the video had three million views on TikTok. By midnight, it had ten million. By Saturday morning, it was trending globally on X (formerly Twitter), featured on the front page of Reddit, and being dissected by every morning talk show from Seattle to Manhattan.

"Okay, you guys," Paige said into the camera with her signature charismatic smirk. "Let me tell you about Julian Vance. This man thought he was marrying a billionaire heiress from the DuPont dynasty. He dumped his loyal, gorgeous wife of five years outside family court because I showed him a downloaded baby ultrasound I found on Google Images in thirty seconds."

She held up her phone to the screen, displaying screenshots of Julian’s text messages.

*Julian:* "Charlotte, baby, don't worry about my ex. She was dead weight anyway. Can't wait until your dad makes me regional director. Vanguard is just a stepping stone."

*Julian:* "I bought you the Cartier bracelet using project funds. Anything for my future son."

"The best part?" Paige laughed, shaking her head. "The man is medically infertile! His ex-wife had been protecting his fragile male ego for years, taking the blame for not having kids, while this absolute clown was running around trying to impregnate an actress who was literally charging his ex-wife an hourly day rate!"

The internet did what the internet does best: it went to war.

Julian’s LinkedIn profile was bombarded with hundreds of thousands of clown emojis and screenshots of his fertility report. Vanguard Infrastructure’s corporate social media accounts were flooded with demands to know why they had harbored an embezzler.

By noon on Saturday, Vanguard’s PR department released an emergency statement:

*“Vanguard Infrastructure has terminated Julian Vance for gross misconduct and financial malfeasance. The firm has initiated legal proceedings to recover all misappropriated funds and is fully cooperating with law enforcement agencies.”*

Meanwhile, in a dingy, six-hundred-square-foot motel room near the Mexican border in San Ysidro, Evelyn Vance sat on the edge of a stained mattress, watching the disaster unfold on a cheap flat-screen television.

A local news crew had tracked her down. A live broadcast on King County News showed a reporter standing outside her former estate in San Diego, where moving trucks from Apex Lending were hauling out her antique furniture.

*"Once a prominent figure in Bellevue high society,"* the reporter announced, *"Evelyn Vance now faces multiple civil judgments and potential criminal charges after defrauding private lenders to fund an eight-hundred-thousand-dollar engagement party for a fictional heiress."*

The television screen flashed a high-resolution photo of Evelyn being escorted out of the Bellevue Lakeside Resort, her makeup smeared, looking like an unhinged harpy.

"No... turn it off! Turn it off!" Evelyn screamed, throwing her plastic water bottle at the television screen.

The door to the motel room burst open.

Julian stumbled inside, his face pale, smelling of stale alcohol and cheap fast food. He had taken an overnight Greyhound bus down from Seattle after his bank cards were canceled and his condo’s electronic keycards were deactivated by the building association.

"Mom," Julian gasped, dropping his backpack onto the floor. "We have to run. The police... the police are looking for me in Seattle."

Evelyn slowly turned her head. Her eyes were bloodshot, rimmed with dark, bruised circles of pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You," she whispered, her voice trembling with venom.

"Mom, please, we have to figure out a plan—"

"You ruined us!" Evelyn lunged off the bed with terrifying speed, her manicured nails raking across Julian’s cheek, drawing blood. "You useless, pathetic, barren weakling! I gave up my life for you! I put my house on the line for you! And you couldn't even tell the difference between an heiress and a two-bit street actress?!"

Julian staggered backward, clutching his bleeding cheek, shock and horror warring across his face. "Mom! You were the one who pushed me! You told me to dump Nora! You said Nora was trash! You arranged the private loan with Cruz!"

"Because I thought you were a man!" Evelyn screamed, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. "I thought you were going to make us rich! Instead, you made us the laughingstock of the entire country! Look at your phone! Look at the television! We are pariahs! We are beggars!"

She collapsed against the wall, sliding down to the dirty carpet, sobbing hysterically into her hands.

Julian stood in the center of the cramped room, looking at the woman who had spent his entire life molding him into an arrogant, narcissistic monster. There was no love in this room. There was no loyalty.

There was only the rotting carcass of their shared greed.
