Chapter 8 - Camille’s Unraveling

By November, the fallout of the Mercer estate scandal had settled into a quiet, permanent realignment.

Camille remained in Florida, working a low-level administrative job at a regional marketing firm, her credit rating in ruins and her access to the Mercer family trust entirely severed by judicial order. Her high-society friends in Richmond, having caught wind of the forged documents and financial fraud, quietly distanced themselves from her social circle.

Lydia, humbled by the near-collapse of her family and the realization of her own blind favoritism, retreated from active social hosting. She spent her weekends alone in her Westcreek estate, occasionally attending quiet bridge club meetings where she no longer dominated conversations with boasts about her family's wealth.

Cole and I visited her once every few weeks—not out of obligation, but out of a patient, guarded grace. Lydia never mentioned money again in our presence. Whenever she tried to offer unsolicited advice on our careers or our home, a single, calm look from Cole was enough to gently remind her of the new boundaries we had established.

My consulting business continued to thrive. We signed two new corporate cybersecurity clients in Northern Virginia, and I hired an additional risk analyst to help manage our growing portfolio. My father dropped by our townhouse on most Sundays, bringing a box of pastries from his favorite Fredericksburg bakery and spending hours with Cole in our backyard fixing up an old vintage bicycle we found at a flea market.

The toxic fog that had hung over our marriage since the day we met had finally lifted, leaving behind something clean, bright, and unbreakable.
