Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The legal victory at Marcus's office was total, but the fallout was only beginning.

Realizing that legal action was futile, Sterling officially withdrew as Patricia’s council that afternoon. With no legal shield left, Patricia and Madison were faced with an absolute deadline: thirty days to pack up thirty years of living and vacate the Birchwood Lane property.

Over the next two weeks, Ethan and I maintained a strict boundary. We blocked their numbers, communicating only through Marcus regarding the logistics of the move.

However, Richard called Ethan private from a payphone near his doctor’s office ten days later.

"Ethan..." Richard's voice was faint, overwhelmed with exhaustion. "I'm calling because... I need you to know I'm not staying with her."

Ethan paused, holding the phone against his ear as he stood in our living room. "What do you mean, Dad?"

"I signed lease papers for a small one-bedroom apartment near the clinic today," Richard confessed, a faint tremor in his breath. "I used my small social security checks that she didn't know I had saved. I can't do it anymore, Ethan. After that day in the lawyer's office... she went completely mad. Screaming at Madison, screaming at me... destroying things in the house."

Ethan took a deep breath, resting his head against the wall. "Dad..."

"I was a coward, Ethan," Richard wept softly over the line. "I watched her treat your wife like garbage for years, and I said nothing because I was terrified of being her target. I ruined my relationship with you, and I almost let her ruin your marriage. You did the right thing by cutting us off. You're a better man than I ever was."

Ethan was silent for a long moment. The pain in his father's voice was genuine, the painful realization of a man who had spent a lifetime enabling a monster only to end up with nothing.

"Do you need help moving your personal things, Dad?" Ethan asked softly.

"No, son," Richard replied through tears. "I hired a small moving van. I'm taking my clothes and my books, and I'm leaving while she's out with Madison tomorrow. I don't want your money, Ethan. I just... I hope someday, maybe, you'll let me see Lily again."

Ethan looked across the room at me. I offered him a gentle nod.

"When you're settled in your apartment, Dad, call us," Ethan said softly. "We'll bring Lily over for ice cream."

On the other end of the line, Richard sobbed quietly, whispering his gratitude before hanging up.

The next day, Richard officially left the house, moving into his modest one-bedroom apartment. Patricia’s grand kingdom was falling apart, room by room, brick by brick.
