Chapter 7 - Blood Money and Broken Alliances

By 3:30 in the afternoon, Chloe was sitting at our dining table, her eyes red and puffy, clutching a hot mug of chamomile tea with both hands. Her two young children were upstairs in our spare media room, safely distracted by Disney movies and snacks I had laid out for them.
On our dining table lay the contents of Arthur Miller’s hidden metal lockbox.
Sarah Vance, our litigation attorney, sat across from Daniel, methodically turning the pages of the yellowed, handwritten documents with gloved fingers.
"It’s authentic," Sarah said, adjusting her tortoiseshell reading glasses. "This is Arthur Miller’s authentic holographic will, witnessed and notarized in 2015, three weeks before his passing. It explicitly revokes all prior instruments and establishes the Miller Family Legacy Trust. Under the terms of this document, Patricia was granted a life estate in the Rockville colonial, contingent upon her paying all property taxes and maintaining no secondary encumbrances without the written consent of all three beneficiaries."
Sarah looked up, meeting Daniel’s eyes.
"She had no legal right to encumber the property with a two-hundred-and-eighty-five-thousand-dollar HELOC. She had no legal right to take out judgment liens. And she had absolutely zero legal authority to sell the property to Mark for one hundred and twenty thousand dollars."
Chloe let out a muffled sob, burying her face in her hands. "We gave her our entire savings. Every dime Mark and I saved for ten years. We thought we were securing our kids' future. We're ruined. We're completely bankrupt."
"You're not bankrupt, Chloe," Daniel said gently, leaning forward. "Because Mark never legally bought the house. The conveyance to Mark is void ab initio—invalid from the very beginning. The title company that closed that sale on Monday committed gross negligence by failing to verify the probate chain. Their insurance policy will have to refund your one hundred and twenty thousand dollars in full."
Chloe looked up, hope flickering through the terror in her eyes. "Really? We can get our money back?"
"Yes," Sarah Vance confirmed. "The title insurer will eat that loss because their underwriters failed to catch the unprobated estate. But Patricia... Patricia is in catastrophic legal danger. When we file this will with the register of wills, the probate court will refer this directly to the State’s Attorney for criminal fraud."
Suddenly, the front doorbell rang.
Chloe flinched, pulling back from the table. "Is that Mark? Or her?"
Daniel walked to the foyer, checked the security monitor, and unlocked the deadbolt.
Standing on the porch was Mark.
He looked hollowed out, wearing an untucked flannel shirt, his eyes bloodshot, his hands shoved deep into his coat pockets. The arrogant, cowardly brother who had backed out of our door a week ago was completely gone. In his place was a broken, terrified man.
Behind him, sitting in her idling car at the curb, was Melissa.
"Dan," Mark choked out, his voice cracking. "Please. Just let me talk to Chloe. Her phone is off. I know she’s here."
"Chloe is safe inside," Daniel said coldly, blocking the doorway. "Along with our attorney."
Melissa killed her engine and marched up the walkway. Her face was flushed with humiliated rage, waving a white legal envelope in her hand.
"Daniel! You have your attack-dog lawyer serving me at my corporate headquarters?!" Melissa spat, marching right up to the porch steps. "I had to explain to HR why a sheriff was handing me a court summons for defamation! You are ruining this family!"
"Shut up, Melissa," Mark suddenly barked, turning on his sister with a ferocity that stopped her dead in her tracks.
Melissa gasped, staring at Mark. "Excuse me?!"
"I said shut your damn mouth!" Mark yelled, tears spilling over his cheeks. "You don't know anything! You've been running your mouth on Facebook like an unhinged lunatic, posting lies about Rachel, while Mom has been bleeding us dry! The sheriff served us an eviction notice today! We're homeless, Melissa! Chloe and the kids are homeless because Mom stole Arthur's house!"
Melissa blinked, her self-righteous sneer crumbling into confusion. "What... what are you talking about? Mom gave you the house!"
"Mom didn't give me anything!" Mark screamed. "She dumped half a million dollars of fraudulent debt on my back, took my life savings, and tried to run away to Daniel’s house so the creditors wouldn't seize her bank accounts! And you—you idiot—you helped her do it!"
Melissa stood on our front walkway, the wind whipping her hair across her face, completely frozen.
Daniel looked at his two siblings—the golden child who had facilitated the fraud, and the vicious enabler who had weaponized social media to destroy his wife.

"Come inside," Daniel commanded coldly. "Both of you. It’s time you see what your mother actually left behind."
