Chapter 6 - Vanessa’s Desperation

Three days after the eviction, I was having lunch with a prospective commercial tenant at *L’Ami*, a high-end French bistro located in the atrium of the Mercer Financial Plaza. The restaurant was bright, elegant, and filled with attorneys, venture capitalists, and civic leaders discussing multi-million-dollar developments over espresso and chilled oysters.

I had just signed a five-year lease renewal for a corporate law firm when the heavy brass entrance doors swung open with a bang.

The room fell quiet.

Vanessa stood in the doorway. She was wearing a trench coat that looked like it hadn't been washed in days, large sunglasses that failed to hide the deep bruising beneath her eyes, and a wild, hunted expression. Behind her, holding a high-definition smartphone on an extendable stabilizer gimbal, was a young man with a backward baseball cap—a local "clout-chaser" influencer she had apparently hired to document her confrontation.

"There she is!" Vanessa shouted, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings of the restaurant.

Several patrons turned in disgust. The head maitre d' immediately stepped forward with his hands raised. "Excuse me, miss, this is a private dining room—"

Vanessa shoved past him with surprising strength, marching directly toward my booth. The cameraman followed closely behind, aiming the lens directly at my face.

"Smile for the camera, Claire!" Vanessa screamed, her voice shaking with manic adrenaline. "Show the three million people watching this livestream how a billionaire treats her own flesh and blood! Show them how you threw your sister out onto the street! Show them how you destroyed our family for your own sick, twisted amusement!"

My lunch guest, an elderly senior partner named Arthur Pendelton, looked alarmed. "Claire, what is this?"

"Stay seated, Arthur," I said softly, dabbing my lips with a linen napkin. "It’s just an old debt coming due."

I did not jump up. I did not hide my face. I sat comfortably in the leather booth, looking up at Vanessa with cold, clinical detachment.

"Vanessa," I said, my voice effortlessly cutting through her theatrical hysteria. "Put the camera down before you add federal cyberstalking to your pending grand jury indictment."

"I have nothing left to lose!" Vanessa shrieked, slamming both hands down onto my table, rattling the silverware and knocking over a small vase of white orchids. "Daniel won't speak to me! Mom and Dad are living in a filthy six-hundred-square-foot motel off the highway! We don't have money for food! We don't have money for our defense attorneys! And you’re sitting here drinking thirty-dollar wine and eating oysters!"

"You had forty-five thousand dollars in an offshore checking account that you forgot to declare during your pre-trial asset disclosure, Vanessa," I said evenly.

The cameraman paused, lowering the gimbal an inch.

Vanessa froze, the color draining from her cheeks. "What... what are you talking about?"

"Did you really think the forensic accountants I hired only looked at the wedding invoices?" I asked, pulling my phone from my purse and setting it face-up on the table. "You opened a private account in the Cayman Islands six months ago under the name 'V. Mercer Holdings.' You siphoned eight separate installments of five thousand dollars from Daniel's corporate marketing fund, which your father redirected into your personal crypto wallet."

The restaurant was dead silent now. Every patron, every waiter, every busboy was listening.

"The federal prosecutors received the unsealed banking records this morning at ten o'clock," I continued, taking a slow sip of my sparkling water. "Which means that your bail conditions—the ones that strictly forbid the concealment of foreign assets—have officially been violated."

Vanessa began to shake. "You're lying. You're making that up. You're just trying to scare me!"

"I don't need to scare you, Vanessa," I said. "Look behind you."

Through the revolving glass doors of the bistro stepped two Metro Police officers, accompanied by a United States Marshal in a dark suit.

The cameraman instantly killed the live feed, tucked the gimbal under his arm, and bolted toward the kitchen emergency exit, leaving Vanessa standing entirely alone in the center of the dining room.

"Vanessa Mercer?" the Marshal said, his badge gleaming against his jacket as he approached the table.

Vanessa spun around, her mouth trembling, her hands raised defensively. "No! Wait! I didn't do anything! It was my father! Richard did everything! He forced me to sign those papers! He told me Daniel wouldn't care!"

"Save it for the federal magistrate, ma'am," the Marshal said, grabbing her right arm and twisting it smoothly behind her back. The steel handcuffs clicked shut around her wrists. "Your bail has been revoked by order of District Judge Vance. You are being remanded into custody pending trial."

"Claire! Claire, please!" Vanessa screamed as she was pulled backward toward the exit, her designer heels dragging across the hardwood floor. "Tell them! Tell them you're my sister! You can't let them put me in prison! I'm pretty! I can't go to prison! Claire!"

The patrons of the restaurant watched in stunned silence as the former high-society debutante was dragged through the brass doors and shoved into the back of a police interceptor.

I picked up my fork, turned back to Arthur, and smiled politely.

"Now, Arthur," I said, as though nothing had happened. "Where were we on the escalation clause for the third floor?"

May you like

Arthur stared at me for three long seconds, swallowed hard, and cleared his throat. "Right... yes. The escalation clause. Let’s... let’s finalize that immediately, Ms. Mercer."
