Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

The afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across the quiet Virginia neighborhood, painting the lawns in warm amber light.
Five minutes away from Margaret’s house, on the wide wooden porch of his new home, James sat comfortably in a rocking chair that moved with a steady, soothing rhythm. The screen door was propped open, letting in the sweet scent of jasmine and freshly cut grass from the untamed garden.
He wore a loose cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the pale, silvery scars that cross-hatched his forearms—permanent reminders of the day he walked through fire to reclaim his family.
In his lap rested Lily, now a bright, curious toddler who loved pointing at passing butterflies and babbling in her own secret language. Wrapped securely around her shoulders was a brand-new pink blanket, soft and warm, untainted by judgment or expectation.

Margaret stood by the screen door, watching them with a cup of coffee in her hand, a quiet smile gracing her lips. The ghosts of the past were gone, dissolved by time, courage, and unconditional love.
Every afternoon, James would sit on that porch holding his granddaughter, his scarred hands resting gently around her blanket—the hands that had saved her life, shattered thirty years of tyranny, and finally set them all free. The fire had tried to consume them, but instead, it had burned away the darkness, leaving behind a future built on warmth, peace, and unbreakable grace.
