Chapter 8 - The Legal Reckoning

By 1:00 AM, the Cape Fear Resort had returned to quiet elegance, but the legal machinery in New Hanover County was turning with relentless momentum.

Chloe and I sat in a private conference room at the Wilmington Police Department headquarters downtown. Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with the financial crimes division, sat across the oak table from us, leafing through a stack of documents we had provided.

“Well, Miss Vance,” Detective Miller said, setting his reading glasses down and rubbing his eyes. “Your brother-in-law didn't do himself any favors tonight.”

“What are the initial charges, Detective?” Chloe asked, her legal pad already filled with notes.

“For tonight’s incident at the resort? Kyle Vance is charged with disorderly conduct, second-degree trespassing, resisting arrest, and assault on a law enforcement officer—he tried to kick Officer Higgins in the groin while they were loading him into the transport van.”

I raised an eyebrow. “And Melissa?”

“Interfering with a police officer and trespassing. She was cited and released on an unsecured bond about thirty minutes ago. She’s currently in the lobby waiting for someone to give her a ride.”

“And my mother?”

“Your mother wasn't arrested,” Miller replied gently. “She was escorted out by resort security and taken to a nearby hotel by a family liaison officer. She was… extremely distressed, to put it mildly.”

“Now let’s talk about the real problem,” Chloe said, tapping a red folder on the table. “The financial fraud.”

Detective Miller nodded, his expression turning serious. When Kyle had been booked, the arresting officers had inventoried his personal effects. In Kyle’s leather wallet, they had found three different corporate credit cards.

None of them were in Kyle’s name.

Two of them were secondary cards issued to *Vance Relocation LLC* under Melissa’s authorized user tag, which Kyle had been using without authorization for six months. But the third card was the bombshell: a high-limit business line in the name of *Oakwood Logistics Partners LLC*—a dummy company Kyle had registered two years ago, using my personal Social Security number and my business address as the corporate guarantor without my knowledge.

I had discovered the existence of this shadow account only three hours prior, when Arthur’s forensic accounting software ran a deep-tier credit sweep following the confrontation at the gala.

“He ran up forty-two thousand dollars on this line of credit over the past fourteen months,” I said, pointing to the transaction history. “Every dollar was funneled into online sports betting accounts, personal vehicle modifications, and high-end electronics.”

Detective Miller whistled softly. “Identity theft, obtaining property under false pretenses, and corporate credit card fraud exceeding ten thousand dollars. In North Carolina, that’s a Class F felony. That’s not a fine and community service, Miss Vance. If the State files these charges, he is looking at active prison time.”

“File them,” I said without a single second of hesitation.

Detective Miller looked at me closely. “Miss Vance, once I submit this packet to the District Attorney, it cannot be undone. Family members often come back three weeks later begging to drop the charges because ‘things got out of hand.’ Are you prepared to see this through to a grand jury indictment?”

“Detective,” I said, leaning forward, resting my hands flat on the cold steel table. “Kyle Vance spent three years treating my hard work like his personal trust fund. Tonight, he brought that entitlement into my professional world, tried to assault my attorney, and threatened to ruin my reputation. He didn't make a mistake; he ran a calculated financial scam. Prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.”

Miller nodded once, a look of professional respect in his eyes. “Understood. We’ll hold him overnight. The magistrate will set a secured bond in the morning, and with these felony warrants attached, he won't be walking out without fifty thousand dollars cash.”

As Chloe and I stepped out of the police station into the warm night air, we saw Melissa sitting on a concrete bench near the station steps.

She looked hollowed out. Her dress was torn at the hem, her makeup was smeared in black streaks across her cheeks, and she was clutching a paper cup of water like a lifeline.

When she saw me emerge through the double glass doors, she stood up, staggering slightly.

“Nora…” Melissa’s voice was completely broken. There was no rage left in her. No smug arrogance. No Instagram-curated superiority. Just the raw, pathetic desperation of someone whose entire house of cards had collapsed into dust. “Nora, please. They’re saying Kyle has felonies. They’re saying he won't get out. Tyler and Leo are at the hotel with Mom. We have nothing left. We don't even have enough money for breakfast tomorrow.”

I stopped at the top of the steps, looking down at her from ten feet away.

“You had forty-three thousand dollars of my money over three years, Melissa,” I said quietly. “You had a luxury truck. You had a free vacation home. You had a sister who would have moved mountains for you if you had simply treated her like a human being.”

“I’m sorry!” Melissa burst into racking, violent sobs, dropping to her knees on the station steps. “I’m sorry, Nora! I was jealous! I was so damn jealous of you! You’re successful, you’re free, you have everything… and Kyle has been failing for years! I just wanted to feel like we were equal to you! Please… don’t send my husband to prison! Don’t put Mom on the street!”

I looked down at my older sister, the girl who had spent our childhood taking my toys, taking my credit, and convincing our parents that I existed only to serve her needs.

“You wanted to feel equal to me, Melissa?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Then welcome to equality. In the real world, when you spend money you didn't earn, you go into debt. When you steal, you go to jail. And when you treat the people who love you like garbage, you end up alone.”

I turned my back on her and walked toward Chloe’s waiting car.

Behind me, the sound of Melissa’s weeping echoed into the empty Carolina night, unanswered.
