Chapter 4 - The House of Lies and the Search Warrant

While I focused on physical therapy—learning to walk again with the help of a heavy-duty frame and sheer stubborn willpower—Captain Hayes and Detective Keller executed a multi-jurisdictional search warrant on the Sterling family estate.
The sprawling colonial home where I had endured three years of psychological erosion and physical intimidation was now cordoned off with yellow police tape. Inside, federal investigators tore through mahogany bookshelves, antique armoires, and hidden wall safes.
Victor had built an empire of corporate law on intimidation, insider manipulation, and hidden offshore accounts—many of which were tied directly to his mother’s inheritance and illicit real estate kickbacks. But what interested the JAG investigators more than his white-collar crimes was the physical evidence of domestic control.
In Victor’s private study, hidden behind a false back in his executive desk, Keller found a trove of digital records: deleted emails, financial surveillance logs on my military bank accounts, and audio recordings of Victor bragging to his mother about how he planned to sabotage my career evaluation reports by calling my commanding officers anonymously.
"Look at this," Keller muttered to the federal agent assisting him, holding up a heavy leather-bound ledger.
The ledger wasn't financial. It was a meticulous logbook dating back four years—the entire duration of our marriage. Every time I went to a training exercise, every promotion milestone, every late-night study session at the base library was meticulously tracked, annotated with red ink, and graded by Victor with derogatory comments about my loyalty as a wife.
Down in the basement, behind the wine cellar, investigators discovered a secondary security server. When the technical crew cracked the encryption, they found dozens of hidden indoor surveillance camera feeds streaming directly to Victor’s phone—meaning every minute of my life inside that house had been monitored without my consent.
Outside, a crowd of local reporters had gathered behind the police barricades. Flashbulbs popped incessantly as news vans broadcasted live updates across the state: Prominent Defense Attorney Victor Sterling Arrested in Federal Raid; Military Wife and Newly Commissioned Second Lieutenant Survives Brutal Staircase Attack.
Eleanor Sterling, released briefly on an initial technicality before federal warrants were finalized, tried to push past the reporters on the front lawn, her face twisted in fury.

"This is a witch hunt!" she shrieked into a thrusting microphone, her designer sunglasses askew. "My son is an honorable man! That ungrateful little gold-digger fabricated everything to ruin our family name!"
Little did she know, Captain Hayes was already walking out of the front doors of the estate, holding a second arrest warrant—this one signed by a federal judge specifically for Eleanor Sterling, for wire fraud, conspiracy to commit domestic sabotage, and destruction of federal evidence.
