Chapter 10 - Rebirth in Ashes

Three days later.
The private penthouse in the penthouse suite of the Moretti Tower was completely locked down. Below us, the city of Chicago bustled under a blanket of fresh, pristine winter snow, entirely unaware of the bloodbath that had occurred in the dark underbelly of the city.
The Casiraghi syndicate had officially sued for peace.
With Julian Vance dead and the tactical strike team wiped out without a single survivor, Roman’s counter-offensive had been swift, merciless, and absolute. In seventy-two hours, four Casiraghi shipping vessels in the Mediterranean had mysteriously caught fire, and their primary financial broker in Zurich had vanished without a trace. They were broken, terrified, and forced back onto their knees.
I sat on the edge of the king-sized bed in our master suite.
The room was bathed in the warm, golden glow of the afternoon sun reflecting off the snow. For the first time in six months, the door between our bedrooms was wide open. The ghost of our separation had been burned away, replaced by a quiet, fragile intimacy.
Roman emerged from the bathroom, wearing only a pair of dark lounge trousers.
Bandages were wrapped tightly around his broad torso, covering the knife slash and the bullet graze, but his color had returned. The razor-sharp edge of his face was softened by the ease in his eyes.
He walked over to the bed, not as a boss, not as a killer, but as a man returning home.
He sat down beside me, taking my left hand into his.
On my fourth finger rested the magnificent diamond ring from the velvet box. It caught the afternoon light, throwing prisms of blue and fire across the sheets.
"It fits," he said softly, his thumb tracing the curve of my knuckle.
"It’s beautiful," I answered, leaning my head against his uninjured shoulder. He wrapped his arm around me, pulling me flush against his side, his chin resting against the crown of my head.
"I'm sorry, Serena," he whispered into my hair. "For every night I left you alone. For every cold word. For every tear you cried believing you were unloved."
I closed my eyes, breathing in his familiar scent—sandalwood, fresh cedar, and the clean warmth of his skin.
"You kept me alive," I murmured. "You carried the hell so I could live in the light. But Roman... we don't keep secrets anymore. If there’s a war, we fight it together. If there’s a bullet, we face it together. Don't you ever shut me out again."
Roman leaned down, pressing his lips to mine. The kiss was soft, lingering, full of a fierce, reverent devotion that made my soul ache with relief.
"Never again," he swore against my lips. "You are my wife. In the shadows, and in the light. From this day until the day they put me in the ground."
May you like
For a few hours, the world was still. The war was over. We had survived the wolves, unmasked the hunter, and reclaimed our love from the edge of the abyss.
Or so we believed.
