Chapter 5 - The Corporate Vulture

The board room of Sterling Tech was designed to intimidate. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooked the glittering downtown skyline, and a massive mahogany conference table dominated the center of the room. Two weeks after Mark’s arrest, I sat at the head of that table—the exact seat Mark had arrogantly reserved for himself.
Standing behind my chair was my newly appointed corporate counsel, a razor-sharp attorney named Marcus Vance, who specialized in hostile corporate takeovers and forensic asset recovery. Across the table sat three jittery venture capitalists and Mark’s corporate co-founder, David, who looked like he hadn't slept since the indictment dropped.
"Mrs. Sterling, with all due respect, freezing corporate accounts and executing an emergency injunction on executive restructuring will destroy investor confidence," David stammered, adjusting his silk tie nervously. "Mark founded this company—"
"Mark borrowed the initial seed capital against my personal inheritance, David," I interrupted, my voice smooth, even, and cutting through the room like a scalpel. I slid a certified financial audit across the polished mahogany toward him. "And according to Section 4 of the corporate charter—which Mark drafted himself in a fit of corporate arrogance—any felony conviction or ongoing criminal indictment involving fraud, coercion, or violent crime against a primary shareholder results in immediate forfeiture of voting shares and executive control."
David snatched the document up, his eyes scanning the legal paragraphs frantically. His face drained of color as reality set in.
"This... this means Mark is entirely stripped of his equity," David whispered, looking up in sheer horror.
"Mark is finished," Marcus Vance corrected smoothly, stepping forward to rest his hands on the back of my chair. "And the board has two choices, gentlemen: either you cooperate fully with the District Attorney’s investigation regarding the fraudulent asset transfers, or you can join Mark in facing federal wire fraud and conspiracy charges for helping him cover up his domestic operations."
The venture capitalists exchanged panicked glances. Within three minutes, the unanimous vote was cast. Sterling Tech was mine. Every server, every patent, every dollar Mark had stolen to fund his double life and his social posturing was now locked under my absolute authority.
As the meeting adjourned and the shaken executives scrambled out of the room like rats fleeing a sinking ship, Marcus leaned down close to my ear.
"Impressive work, Elena. The arraignment for the attempted murder and domestic torture charges is set for tomorrow morning. Are you ready to face him?"
May you like
I looked out the massive glass window toward the county detention center across the river, where Mark was currently discovering that a high-end tech CEO has very few friends when the money runs out.
"Ready?" I said, a cold, satisfied fire burning in my chest. "I’ve been waiting eighteen months for him to look me in the eye when I'm not strapped to the ground."
