Chapter 5 - The Panic in Lake Forest

While Hannah was settling into the breathtaking penthouse suite of the Kingsley Estate overlooking Lake Michigan, absolute chaos was erupting inside the grand, marble-pillowed foyer of the Lake Forest mansion.

Ethan Caldwell pushed the front door open so hard it slammed against the interior wall with a deafening crack. He tore off his silk tie, throwing it angrily onto the floor, and ripped his suit jacket off, tossing it over the banister.

“Ethan? Ethan, what on earth happened back there?” his mother shrieked, rushing down the curved staircase. Her face was twisted with panic and disbelief. “The judge—he didn't rule in our favor at the end! They seized the bank accounts! The federal agents—they served subpoenas right there in the courtroom! Ethan, talk to me! What is going on?!”

“Shut up, Mother! Just shut up!” Ethan roared, his face flushed a furious, ugly crimson as he paced frantically across the marble floor.

The immaculate facade he had cultivated for years—the cool, collected, untouchable corporate genius—was completely gone. In its place was a terrified, cornered man realizing he had just picked a fight with the wrong family.

“Do you have any idea who that woman was?” Ethan muttered, his voice trembling as he pulled out his phone and frantically dialed his chief financial officer. “Do you? That wasn't just some random billionaire! That was Eleanor Kingsley! Eleanor Kingsley, Mom!”

“Eleanor Kingsley… the real estate mogul?” His mother’s hand flew to her mouth, her eyes widening in sheer terror. “The one who owns half the commercial towers in Chicago?”

“Yes! And she’s Hannah’s mother!” Ethan yelled into the phone as it rang endlessly without an answer. “Damn it, pick up! Pick up!” He threw his phone against the wall, watching the screen shatter into a spiderweb of cracks.

The implications were crashing down on him with terrifying speed. The Lake Forest mansion? It was mortgaged under a shell company that Eleanor’s corporate legal team had already frozen. His investment firm? His major institutional investors had already caught wind of the federal white-collar crime investigation and were pulling out their capital by the millions. His bank accounts? Locked down by court order pending an asset-recovery audit.

Just twenty minutes ago, Ethan had stood in a courtroom believing he had won absolute victory, reducing his pregnant wife to absolute destitution with a smug smile. Now, he was bankrupt, facing federal felony charges for wire fraud and perjury, and utterly blacklisted from every major boardroom in the Midwest.

“We need to leave,” Ethan whispered, his hands shaking uncontrollably as he stared at his reflection in the grand hallway mirror. “We need to get out of the country before the marshals come.”

“Leave? With what money, Ethan?” his mother cried, her voice cracking with hysteria. “Your accounts are frozen! We have nothing!”

Ethan froze. The exact words he had whispered to Hannah in the courtroom just hours earlier—“Back to nothing”—echoed mockingly in his own mind.

The wheel had turned. And the crushing weight of nothingness was finally falling on him.
