Chapter 1 - THE KNOCK

The knock came again.

Once.

Hard enough to rattle the glass in the front door.

Nobody moved.

Michael's hand was still wrapped around my wrist, but the pressure had changed. A few seconds earlier, he had been controlling me.

Now he was afraid.

I knew it because I had spent months studying him.

The way his jaw tightened when he lied.

The way his right thumb rubbed against his index finger when he was nervous.

The way his eyes darted toward the hallway whenever he thought someone might be listening.

Tonight, his eyes went straight to the door.

Ashley lowered her phone.

"Michael," she whispered.

"Don't."

His voice was barely audible.

Chris stood up.

"Who's that?"

Michael didn't answer.

Another knock.

Three quick taps.

Then silence.

Rain hammered the windows.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

My baby kicked beneath my ribs.

Michael finally released my wrist.

"Stay here."

I almost laughed.

He had forgotten something important.

I wasn't his prisoner anymore.

Not really.

I stepped away from the table.

Michael grabbed my arm again.

"Sarah."

I looked at him.

"Let go."

He stared at me.

Perhaps it was the first time I'd ever said those words without trembling.

Ashley noticed.

"She's acting weird."

Michael's face hardened.

"She's pregnant. She's emotional."

I almost told her the truth.

I almost told every person in that kitchen exactly what Michael had done.

But the plan depended on patience.

The door opened.

A woman stood outside wearing a dark raincoat.

Beside her was a tall man holding a folder against his chest.

Behind them, a police cruiser sat at the curb.

Michael's face went white.

The woman looked directly at me.

"Sarah?"

My throat tightened.

"Yes."

"I'm Detective Elena Brooks."

Michael stepped forward.

"This is a private residence."

"I know."

She held up her badge.

"We received information concerning a possible domestic abuse situation."

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael laughed.

It was an ugly little sound.

"That's ridiculous."

Detective Brooks looked past him.

Her eyes landed on my arm.

On the fresh stencil.

BAD MOTHER.

Then she looked at the tattoo machine.

Then at the black ink bottle.

Her expression changed.

"Who owns that ink?"

Michael moved in front of the table.

"It's mine."

"May I see the bottle?"

"No."

The detective's eyes narrowed.

"Mr. Carter, step away from the table."

"I said no."

That was when the second officer entered.

Michael suddenly looked at me.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Terrified.

"You called them."

I didn't answer.

Ashley stepped backward.

"Michael, what's happening?"

He ignored her.

"You called them."

I looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

His face relaxed for half a second.

Then I finished.

"I didn't."

The detective looked at him.

"She didn't have to."

Michael froze.

Detective Brooks reached for the ink bottle.

Michael lunged.

The officer grabbed him before he could reach it.

The bottle fell.

It hit the floor.

Black liquid spilled across the white tile.

Something tiny rolled from the broken glass.

A metallic object.

The detective crouched.

She picked it up with a gloved hand.

Michael stopped struggling.

I watched her examine it.

Then she looked at me.

"How long have you known?"

"Two days."

Michael stared at me.

"What did you tell them?"

"Everything."

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Detective Brooks looked toward the officers.

"Secure the house."

Then she turned back to me.

"Sarah, there's something you need to understand."

I swallowed.

"What?"

She held up the tiny metallic object.

"This isn't just a tracker."

Michael closed his eyes.

May you like

And for the first time, I realized the truth was much bigger than the tattoos.
