Chapter 6 - THE VIRTUAL COURT OF LAST RESORT

Sunday morning in Denver was calm and clear.

At 9:55 AM—11:55 AM back east—Daniel and I sat in his home office. The sun poured through the wide windows, illuminating the clean, modern walnut desk, the framed photographs of our trips to Aspen, and the small, silver-framed ultrasound picture of our unborn son sitting beside his monitor.

Daniel was wearing a simple navy blue sweater. He looked rested, healthy, and completely in command of his surroundings.

I sat just out of frame of the high-definition webcam, holding a warm mug of tea, ready to witness the final chapter of a story twelve years in the making.

At 10:00 AM sharp, Daniel clicked the link.

The screen split into four tiles.

What appeared on the monitor was not a family. It was a war zone captured in high definition.

In the top-left tile sat Robert and Elaine Mercer.

The change in their appearance was staggering. Fourteen months earlier, at the Whispering Pines Country Club, Robert had looked like a robust, arrogant patriarch. Now, he looked eighty years old. His cheeks were sunken, his silver hair was unkempt, and his eyes were bloodshot and heavy with exhaustion. He was slumped in his leather armchair, a shadow of the man who had roared with laughter while disinheriting his son.

Beside him, Elaine looked utterly broken. The pearl necklaces were gone. She wore a simple cardigan, her hair pulled back in a hasty, messy bun. Her eyes were red-margined from crying, her fingers twitching continuously around a crumpled paper napkin.

In the top-right tile was Vanessa. She was sitting at her polished white office desk in her suburban home. Her face was bright red, her makeup slightly smeared, her expression twisted into a snarl of defensive fury.

In the bottom-left tile was Marissa. She was joining from her city apartment, sitting on her velvet sofa, wearing oversized designer sunglasses inside her living room to hide her swollen, tear-stained eyes.

And in the bottom-right tile sat Daniel: calm, motionless, silent.

For thirty long seconds, no one spoke. The ambient hum of four different microphones filled the digital space.

It was Vanessa who broke the silence, her voice cutting through the speakers like broken glass.

"Oh, look! The prodigal son decides to grace us with his presence!" she sneered, leaning into her camera. "Must be nice sitting out in Colorado in your little bubble while Mom and Dad are literally going bankrupt!"

Daniel didn't answer. He didn't even blink. He just sat there, watching her with the detachment of a scientist observing bacteria under a slide.

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Marissa shrieked from her tile, her voice high and panicked. "Just shut your mouth! You don't get to talk about bubbles when you’re the reason we’re in this legal nightmare!"

"Me?!" Vanessa barked, spinning in her swivel chair toward her laptop camera. "I was trying to run the properties! I was doing work while you were off at spa weekends and ski trips! Dad asked me to manage the rentals!"

"You didn't manage them!" Marissa yelled back, pointing a long, manicured finger directly at her screen. "You stole from them! The forensic accountant Mom hired said forty thousand dollars is completely missing from the Oak Street account! Forty thousand dollars, Vanessa! You’re stealing from the estate! You’re stealing from my inheritance!"

"It wasn't stealing!" Vanessa snapped, her voice cracking with fury. "I was taking my legitimate management fee! Do you have any idea how much time I spent dealing with those disgusting, rude contractors? Do you know how stressful it was when the tenants started sending legal letters?! I deserved that money! And anyway, Mom explicitly told me I could take an advance on my inheritance to cover the contractor fees for my new kitchen remodel!"

In the top-left tile, Elaine gasped loudly, her hand rushing to her throat.

"I said no such thing!" Elaine choked out, her voice trembling violently. "Vanessa, how can you say that?! I told you that you could use the rental funds for property upkeep! I never said you could buy quartz countertops for your own house!"

"You said I could manage the cash flow, Mom!" Vanessa yelled, refusing to back down. "You didn't give me any guidelines! You and Dad just handed me a bank book and said 'handle it' because Daniel walked out on us!"

"Don't you dare blame Daniel!" Robert suddenly barked, his voice ragged and hoarse. He tried to lean forward, but a sudden fit of coughing seized him, his heavy frame shuddering until Elaine frantically handed him a glass of water.

The bickering dissolved instantly into a chaotic, screaming cross-fire of accusations.

Vanessa screamed at Marissa about unpaid property taxes. Marissa screamed back about Vanessa’s fraudulent bank transfers. Elaine wept loudly into her hands, her shoulders shaking. Robert sat back, gasping for air, staring helplessly at the digital gallery of his destroyed family.

It was an inferno of pure, unadulterated greed and incompetence.

Beside me, Daniel remained utterly motionless. His face was a mask of total stillness. He didn't jump in. He didn't defend himself. He didn't interrupt. He simply watched the house he had built with twelve years of silent sacrifice burn down to the ground in twelve minutes of bitter truth.

Finally, Vanessa, her face flushed dark crimson, slammed both hands down onto her desk. The loud THWACK echoed through everyone's speakers, forcing a sudden, momentary pause in the screaming match.

Vanessa leaned so close to her camera that her face distorted in the lens. Her eyes were wide, frantic, and wild with the panic of a child realizing the ride was over.

And then, she spat out the exact, fatal question that I had foreseen so many months ago.

"This is completely insane!" Vanessa shouted, her voice echoing shrilly through the speakers. "If the lake house is ruined, if the insurance won't pay, and if the rentals are draining cash and getting us sued by the city... then so what exactly are we inheriting?!"

The sentence hung in the digital air like a guillotine blade suspended over the room.
