Chapter 7 - The Final Echoes of the Past

Two weeks passed in a blur of hospital visits, physical therapy consultations, and police interviews.
Elena filed for an emergency divorce and a permanent restraining order, backed by the comprehensive investigative package put together by Detective Vance and the district attorney's office. The audio files from Chloe’s tablet—clear, chilling, and undeniable—formed the cornerstone of a watertight criminal case that rendered Marcus’s high-priced defense attorney virtually powerless.
During the second week, Elena returned to the house on Elm Street accompanied by two uniformed police officers to pack up essential clothing, personal documents, and sentimental items for herself and Chloe.
Walking through the front door felt like stepping into a museum dedicated to a stranger's life. The living room still bore the faint, ghost-like shadow of the cream-colored rug where the incident had occurred—the spot had been professionally cleaned by crime-scene remediation specialists, but Elena could still see the invisible stain every time she looked at the floorboards.
She packed two large suitcases of clothes, Chloe’s favorite books, her stuffed rabbit, and the framed photographs of simpler, happier times before Marcus’s darkness had consumed their home.

In the basement workshop, she caught a glimpse of the heavy metal rod still sitting neatly on the workbench where Marcus had placed it before the police arrived. She didn't look at it for long. She simply pointed it out to Officer Davis, who bagged it as primary evidence, removing the final physical artifact of terror from their lives.
As they drove away from Elm Street for the last time, Elena didn't look back in the rearview mirror. She kept her eyes fixed firmly on the open road ahead, heading toward a small, sunlit apartment on the other side of the city that she had leased the day before. It was smaller than the house, lacking the manicured lawn and the pristine white picket fence, but it smelled of fresh paint, safety, and a brand-new beginning.
