Chapter 10 - Wings Unbound

Two weeks later, the tarmac at Andrews Air Force Base shimmered under the bright afternoon sun. The massive gray fuselage of a C-17 Globemaster transport plane idled on the runway, its jet engines emitting a deep, rhythmic roar that vibrated through the concrete.
A small group of close colleagues and senior officers had gathered near the boarding ramp to see me off. Colonel Sarah Jenkins was there, along with Amanda Vance, Dr. Thomas from Walter Reed, and General Robert Hayes.
I wore my Class-A dress uniform, the silver oak leaves of a Major gleaming brightly on my collar, and the Purple Heart pinned securely over my left breast—right above a heart that beat stronger, freer, and prouder than it ever had before.
“Make sure you keep us updated on the European strategy briefings, Major,” Colonel Jenkins said, wrapping me in a fierce, military-style hug. “Don't let those NATO generals push you around.”
“They wouldn't dare, Colonel,” I laughed, stepping back and shaking hands with Amanda and Dr. Thomas.
Finally, I walked over to General Hayes, who stood waiting by the foot of the aircraft stairs with a quiet, dignified smile.
“Safe travels, Major Miller,” Hayes said, extending his hand. Instead of a formal military handshake, he stepped forward and pulled me into a brief, protective embrace. “Go show Europe what American leadership looks like.”
“I will, General,” I replied, my voice steady and filled with absolute purpose. “Thank you for everything. For believing in me when I almost stopped believing in myself.”
“Always,” he nodded.

I turned, mounted the metal steps of the C-17, and paused at the doorway. I turned back one last time, looking out over the sprawling expanse of the military base, the sparkling skyline of the capital in the distance, and the loyal friends who had helped me reclaim my life.
I gave them a sharp, crisp salute, turned on my heel, and stepped inside the aircraft. The heavy hydraulic ramp slowly lifted, sealing shut against the outside world, as the engines roared to life and pushed us forward into the boundless, beautiful blue sky.
