Chapter 5 - THE UNRAVELING OF THE VANCES

While I rested safely in the hospital suite under the watchful eye of the medical staff, the world that Carter and Mrs. Eleanor Vance had built out of arrogance and corruption was rapidly disintegrating into dust.

By sunrise, local news stations across Northern Virginia were broadcasting breaking updates. The headline scrolled across the bottom of every major screen: “PROMINENT ARLINGTON PROSECUTOR AND DEFENSE ATTORNEY ARRESTED IN SWEEPING FEDERAL CORRUPTION AND FRAUD INVESTIGATION.”

Footage played on loop showing Carter being led out of our Alexandria home in handcuffs, his head ducked down, his expensive designer suit rumpled and stained. Beside him, Mrs. Eleanor was being escorted by federal marshals, her face hidden behind oversized sunglasses as reporters shouted hostile questions about embezzled municipal contracts and illegal land seizures.

In the span of twelve hours, the Vances had gone from ruling the local legal elite to becoming front-page pariahs.

Back at the hospital, my father sat in the armchair by my bedside, quietly reading through a printed financial summary while drinking a cup of black coffee. The morning sun was streaming through the large glass windows, warming the room.

“They’ve already filed their first motion for bail,” my father said casually, not looking up from the papers.

“Will they get it?” I asked, adjusting my pillows as a nurse brought in a light breakfast tray.

“Not a chance,” my father replied, a faint, cold smile touching the corners of his mouth. “The federal magistrate handling their arraignment this morning is an old hunting buddy of mine from the Shenandoah Valley. He takes a very dim view of men who raise their hands to pregnant women—and an even dimmer view of attorneys who think the law is a personal toy box.”

Just then, my phone—a brand-new smartphone my father had handed me an hour earlier, already programmed with all the necessary contacts—buzzed loudly on the bedside table.

The caller ID displayed a number I hadn’t expected to see ever again.

Mrs. Eleanor Vance.

I looked at my father, raising an eyebrow. He simply nodded, reaching over to tap the speakerphone button before leaning back in his chair with a cup of coffee.

“Answer it, sweetheart. Let’s hear what royalty has to say when they’re sitting in a concrete holding cell.”

I pressed the screen, holding my breath.

“Hello?” I said, keeping my voice completely steady.

For a second, there was only static and the harsh echo of a metal-walled jail cell. Then, a voice broke through—not the haughty, condescending tone of the woman who had spat on my cooking and shoved me into a granite counter, but the desperate, cracking whine of a trapped animal.

“Elena?” Mrs. Eleanor sobbed, her voice trembling violently. “Elena, please... you have to listen to me. This is all a terrible misunderstanding. Carter is your husband! He made a mistake, he was stressed, but we’re family!”
