Chapter 5 - The Queen’s Gambit

The rain lashed violently against the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse office, drumming a heavy, relentless rhythm that matched the steady ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner.

I stood holding a crystal glass of aged scotch, watching the distant flashes of lightning illuminate the dark Chicago skyline. The city below looked small, fragile, and entirely manageable from up here.

The heavy oak door swung open silently. Sarah stepped in, holding a slim leather folder.

“The federal indictment was filed an hour ago,” Sarah reported calmly, her voice professional and devoid of unnecessary emotion. “Daniel is currently being held at the federal detention center without bail due to high flight risk. His defense attorney tried to file an emergency motion for release, but it was summarily rejected by Judge Holloway within ten minutes.”

I took a slow sip of the amber liquid, letting the warmth burn the back of my throat. “And Evelyn?”

“She barricaded herself inside a budget motel room near the interstate after her credit cards were permanently blocked,” Sarah replied, offering a faint, ironic smile. “When the motel management tried to evict her for non-payment of her room fee this afternoon, she reportedly threw a porcelain lamp at the desk clerk and had to be escorted off the premises by local police for disturbing the peace.”

A quiet satisfaction bloomed in my chest. Not the loud, reckless satisfaction of petty revenge, but the quiet, deep-seated peace of a architect watching a collapsing structure finally hit the ground and clear the space for something better.

“What about the mansion?” I asked, turning away from the window to face my assistant.

“Aethelgard Holdings officially took physical possession of the property at three o’clock this afternoon,” Sarah said, opening the folder and sliding a set of heavy, antique brass keys onto the center of my desk. “The locks have been changed. The security team has been replaced. And the moving trucks hauled out Evelyn’s designer luggage and Daniel’s wardrobe before the rain started.”

I walked over to the desk and looked down at the keys. Those were the very keys Evelyn had smuggedly told me to leave behind when she ordered me out into the street. Now, they sat right where they belonged—in my palm.

“And Chloe?” I asked.

“She’s settled into her apartment downtown. The commercial lease has been officially transferred to her name free of encumbrances, per your instruction. She sent a brief email asking if there was anything else you needed from her.”

I picked up the keys, their cold metal biting slightly into my skin. “Tell her she’s free to build her own life. No strings attached.”

“Will do,” Sarah said, nodding respectfully before turning toward the door. As she reached the handle, she paused and looked back. “By the way, Clara... the quarterly acquisition meeting with the European partners is scheduled for tomorrow morning at nine. Shall I confirm your attendance?”

I smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that hadn't touched my face in years.

“Confirm it, Sarah,” I said, slipping the keys into my pocket. “It’s time to expand our portfolio.”
