Chapter 10 - The Masterpiece Unfinished

One year later, the city’s premier design magazine ran a ten-page feature spread on Vane Creative and its founder.

The headline across the glossy cover read: The Architecture of Resilience: How Rachel Vane Built an Empire Out of Ruin.

The profile detailed my journey from a quiet, background graphic designer trapped in a gilded cage to one of the most sought-after brand architects in the region. It praised my bold, uncompromising aesthetic, my razor-sharp eye for structural integrity, and my fierce independence.

There was no mention of Jake. There was no mention of Linda, Don, or the kitchen in the hills where a bone had cracked and a new life had been forged. That chapter of my history was buried so deep in the past that it didn’t even merit a footnote.

The autumn sun poured through the high windows, warming the hardwood floors and casting a golden glow over my sketchbook.

My phone lay on the corner of the desk, silent and peaceful.

I picked up my pen, pressed the nib against the blank white paper, and began to draw. Not a corporate logo, not a defensive strategy, not a blueprint for survival.

Just a clean, unbroken line sweeping upward into the light, rising higher and higher until it filled the entire page.

I smiled, exhaled a long, steady breath, and turned the page to begin the next chapter.
